I am told by AT&T staff at their store that soon there will be an update from SAMSUNG that makes it possible to use Captivate as a wifi router. AT&T staff says for about additional $20 more on your existing dataplan.

That would eliminate me to by a MIFI2200 wifi router from VERIZON.

My object is to use a phone with wifi capabilities for my family members IPOD etc etc while driving!

Are they referring to the Mobile AP that's available with the 2.2 Froyo release?  That allows up to 5 devices to connect to your Captivate via WiFi and will share your 3G connection so they can get on the internet.

If so, I haven't heard anything about that requiring a change to anyone's data plan.  Anyone else?

It's a Tethering Plan...and yes when tethering is made available by AT&T there will be additional charges associated with it.

===================================================================
(From AT&Ts site forums):

If your wanting to share/tether data from your phone you can use the DataPro Personal with Tethering plan $45 month that includes 2GB data month (additional data is $10/GB)

You can get a dedicated USB card and get the DataConnect $60 plan that includes 5GB data month (additional data is $0.05/MB)

From your Wireless Service Agreement - Data Service Terms and Conditions

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/legal/plan-terms.jsp

    Furthermore, plans (unless specifically designated for tethering usage) cannot be used for any applications that tether the device (through use of, including without limitation, connection kits, other phone/smartphone to computer accessories, BLUETOOTH® or any other wireless technology) to Personal Computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for any purpose.

====================================================================

I cannot confirm/deny any of this information, because AT&T's website is down...

I guess they think if you're using your device for tethering, you're gonna be hogging more bandwidth...thus the reasoning for charging more.

How exactly did you get it to work as a modem?  I haven't been able to find any good info online for doing it.

Use Barnacle Wi Fi Tether App on Android Market (Need Root).

Using this app you will be able to tether your devices like Laptop/Desktop to access Internet via your Cell Phone 3G network.  You don't have to pay anything extra for doing this.  However the max cap (2 Gb) still applies.
