Hey guys, new user here, I've said hello in the Introductions section already.

I have my Captivate sync'd to my gmail account, which is fine, and I've unchecked the background data setting because I don't use a lot of apps and want to try to save battery life. So, the questions are:

1. Does disabling the background data in fact, improve battery life?
2. Even when I have disabled it, my "mail service"  (and some other) apps will come on and run all by itself.

Can I stop this somehow, and will it eat up battery life?

Not exactly an answer to your question, but the background syncing should only be using about 1% per hour of your battery, if my tests are any indication.  The common big drains are the display and wifi with a weak signal.  Wifi near a strong signal seems to be pretty manageable, battery-drain-wise.

Check out the Battery Life section of the boards for some ideas on how to improve...
