phone half freezes

after turning my phone on, i noticed it would freeze but still "pull down" the notification menu. i could click on my "my lookout" application which is a spyware and malware checker for when i download apps. but i cant back my phone up, ive tried to take the battery out and it still freeezes up. im thinking that i have too many applications downloaded or a faulty phone. anyone else have this problem? any solutions would be greatly appriciated, thanks.
