There's a new version of Perception released on XDA and I've read about it moments ago. I'm just confused which one to use, the Cognition or the Perception? Can't decide which one suits me cause both of them looks amazing based on the logs.

I've used both Perception and Cognition... and now am running Phoenix.  Either Perception or Cognition are fine ROMs.   If you a Captivate based ROM, then go with Cognition... if you'd rather have an i9000 based ROM, then go with Perception.

You may want to try out Cognition first as it has tended to have fewer issues.  You can always then try Perception and make your own personal comparison.

So how's Phoenix? Is it better than Perception and Cognition? I also want to try different ROM, but how? Do I need to do all over the steps like flashing the stock, then master clear from odin then clockwork then the ROM? Or is there any alternative step?

I just flashed Cog 3.03. Pretty darn good and stable. Only glitch I found is that the contacts page wont back out with the back arrow feature. Other than that a very good mix of stock 2.2 and custom. Great work

alright.. so. I first flashed the Perception build 10 from that leaked 2.2 beta version that came out. I freakin loved. Not a huge difference from what i had, but all that and more. A nice treat. Then i tried Cognition 3.04. Seemed pretty much the same some differences. After seeing how easy it was using ROM manager i decided to see what else was out there. I found Phoenix. Flashed it... and ended up flasing back to Cog after 20 miutes. Just wasnt into the orange and black kinda them it had going on. Very nice boot screen, but all and all Cognition seems so far to be the coolest one. Its just got a few more tweaks. And maybe i didnt scour my settings hard enough with perception, but im really diggen the Cognition build and will be stickin with it for at least a lil bit  Wink Wink

I've tried Cognition 3.0.4r2 and Perception 10.2. They are both similar to each other and no not include much of the "custom themes" thing that many of the other distributions seem to have. I've noticed a few differences and have found the Perception build to be nicer for me.

Some differences:
* Perception fixes the bug where when presses the on/off key to turn the screen back on, the phone would display what apps are open before the lock screen is shown.
* Perception allows the HSUPA data protocol which should increase the data rates over the cell modem.
* Perception does not come with LauncherPro. Cognition comes with LauncherPro.
* Perception enables auto-updates of the Google applications. I'm not sure if Cognition does or not.
* Cognition is 2.2 while Perception is 2.2.1
* They put lots of sites in the hosts file to block them (ad-sites). Perception kept trying to connect to the google analytics site in an infinate loop (with a short delay). This could use battery power (but not data). I'm not sure if Cognition does this
* Perception uses "voodoo sound". I've noticed that there is more background noise (faint hiss) when using headphones.
* Perception gives an option of "video chat", though I've never tried it.
* Perception does not seem to be able to enable both the "silent" and "vibrate" modes. When one uses the volume down button, it ends on either silent or vibrate....  Cognition was more like stock 2.1 in this regard.
* Cognition perhaps does not allow as dim of a brightness setting.
* I'm having issues with the prox sensor not detecting my head very well on Perception.
* Both firmwares have a 802.1x related wifi bug where the phone crashes (and restarts itself) in my building (Stock 2.1 also had this issue).

That's all that I can think of for now. What are other people's experiences?

just want to let you know there are different themes out there you can flash if you dont like how it looks and if you really want to you can mod your own themes but that takes a while and youhave to be with photo editing

if choosing a rom based on what apps come on it is a deal breaker some people would amaze me lol not saying that for you it would be but just doesnt seem like a "big" difference

the "voodoo-sound" hiss problem is a known problem and they have gotten better at it

the video chat thing will not work on our phone it requires a front facing camera, most of the 2.2.1 roms are suppose to have this on there but people have modded it to remove this feature since we cannot use it

what do you mean by does not allow as dim of a brightness setting? You can use power widget to change the brightness and all of that to low, high and auto

I agree that choosing a ROM based on the apps it come with is mostly silly, but I just wanted to point out the differences that I had noticed. Regarding the video chat, I was thinking that it would instead use the rear-facing camera. Or is this something that AT&T's network would have to support?

For brightness, I might have been mistaken. I was thinking that the minimum level (when using the brightness slider in settings) was a less bright. I don't have two Captivates so I cannot really tell. I think that the auto-brightness may also have been effected.... Again, I'm not completely sure, so perhaps someone else could comment if they agree or disagree.

video chat is a "feature" ported over from phones that actually have a front facing camera, which ours don't, so no, it won't be supported, not now, not ever, not by anyone.

well, you can enable its support by buying and installing a front-facing camera into your phone, since there's actually room for the front-facing camera chip, but that's probably beyond all of us here (there are youtube videos for how to do it).
