So I noticed that sometimes the kernels that people have put onto ROMS some people just do not like them and want a different one. Some of us are afraid of changing kernels because we really dont know how it will affect our phone. Please leave a review on your kernel that you are using here and if you would recommend it or not.

Things that would be nice to include
Code:
Kernel Name:

Days Used:

ROM Used On:

Kernel name: xcaliburinhand's kernel (not sure version number, but came with Darky's 7.0.1 ROM).

Days used: About a week by now.

ROM used on: Darky's 7.0.1 and 7.7.

System requirements:
-Compatible ROMs: 2.2.1 ROMs only!!!!!!! Do not put 2.2 ROMs or (God forbid) 2.1 ROMs on this!!!!
To check, go to settings -> about phone -> firmware version. Only download if your version says 2.2.1!!! Also check to make sure that your phone is running a I9000 ROM. To check, go to settings -> about phone -> Model number. Make sure it says GT-I9000, NOT I9000m and definitely not SGH-897!!!
-Not compatible with stock firmware or with Cognition.
-Lagfix: Disable lagfix, unless if you used Voodoo 5.0.1 lagfix (that one you don't need to disable lagfix).

Pros: Can use HSUPA (that means faster than 3G, you'll see an H+ icon instead of the 3G icon when it's available), backlight (love this feature!!), 1500 in quadrant, 13 in linpack (that means about 33% faster than your stock 2.1update1 kernel), wireless tethering (unused/untested by me).

Cons: No haptic feedback for the home key, gets slightly hotter (2 ~ 3 degrees Celsius) than stock ROM (I think, might be just imagination), no overclock (overclock makes processor run faster than the speed it's supposed to run at safely).

Comments: Noticed that it goes a lot faster than the stock kernel. Battery life *may* be better than stock (at least it's not worse than stock, that's for sure). There's also no need to pay AT&T for their tethering service. I LOVE THE BACKLIGHT OMG sooo much. Whenever you get a notification, the home, menu, back, and search keys light up, so there's no need to turn on your phone to check for notifications every once in a while.

Look at/download the most recent version.
Suggested installation steps (for least hassle):
0. Download I9000_reoriented_v2.3.0_bln.zip (or whatever is the most recent version (2.3.0 is the most recent at time of post). I like zips because they're more newbie-friendly and sound less scary than tars, but in this case it doesn't matter which one you choose, as the following steps will be the same anyway.
1. Do NOT unzip the .zip file! Well actually you can, but don't re-zip yourself, the re-zipped file won't install on your phone. The zipping is a special process that requires special software that you don't have (if you have it, you wouldn't be reading my post).
2. root your phone. Do not proceed any further if you haven't read up on how to root (don't worry, you can only brick your phone while rooted if you are using Root Explorer, Astro, or Super Manager applications that explore your file systems and deleting important files)
3. download SGS kernel flasher from market. Do not proceed any further if you haven't read up on how to flash a kernel (you can seriously brick your phone [much higher probability than rooting] and render it unusable). http://www.appbrain.com/app/sgs-kernel-flasher/neldar.sgs.kernel.flasher
4. Backup Rom (Rom manager), apps (Titanium backup), and kernel (SGS kernel flasher).
5. Select the .zip file with kernel flasher, and watch the magic happen.

Kernel name: hardcore's SpeedMod kernel STABLE version: K12I (4-Jan-2011)

Days used: About a day.

ROM used on: Darky's 7.7.

System requirements:
-Compatible ROMs: 2.2.1 ROMs for sure, 2.2 ROMs maybe (I have not tested this, so beware before putting it on any 2.2 ROM)

Pros: Can use HSUPA (that means faster than 3G, you'll see an H+ icon instead of the 3G icon when it's available), toggle backlight on or off (love this feature, makes it even better than xcaliburinhand's kernel!!), 1300 in quadrant, 14 in linpack (that means about 25% faster than your stock 2.1update1 kernel), wireless tethering (unused/untested by me). Saves battery life, at least compared to xcaliburinhand's kernel.

Cons: No haptic feedback for the home key, no overclock (overclock makes processor run faster than the speed it's supposed to run at safely), feels slightly slower than xcaliburinhand's kernel, though that could be my imagination.

Comments: Noticed that it goes a lot faster than the stock kernel. Battery life is better than stock. There's also no need to pay AT&T for their tethering service. I LOVE THE BACKLIGHT OMG sooo much. Whenever you get a notification, the home, menu, back, and search keys light up, so there's no need to turn on your phone to check for notifications every once in a while. And if you don't like the backlights, you can turn them off/on at the recovery menu. You can also customize your own tweaks at the recovery menu for a faster phone, though I didn't really play with that. You could also turn on tun.ko support in the kernel, though I found no need for that because of the VPN youtube video, though plausibly you can make the tun.ko module start on bootup, I just haven't tired it yet.

Place to Download: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880
Look at/download the most recent version.

Kernel name: glitterball's 1-6-11 stable overclocking/undervolting kernel (the .tar download)

Days used: ~3 days.

ROM used on: Darky's 7.7, Doc's 7.5.

Note: This kernel allows your phone to overlock to 1.2 GHz. If you do that, I strongly suggest you undervolt your phone with the voltage control app (downloadable from market), or you'll have an uncomfortably warm cellphone in your hand.

System requirements:
-Compatible ROMs: 2.2.1 ROMs for sure, 2.2 ROMs maybe (I have not tested this, so beware before putting it on any 2.2 ROM)

Pros: Can use HSUPA (that means faster than 3G, you'll see an H+ icon instead of the 3G icon when it's available), toggle backlight on or off, 1600 in quadrant, 16 in linpack (that means about 50% faster than your stock 2.1update1 kernel), wireless tethering (unused/untested by me). However, it doesn't really feel like flash is much faster with this phone. Maybe it is, but flash is just so sucky on phones in general =/.

Cons: Need to enable backlight notification by downloading BLN Control from the market, not included in the download page. Slurps battery if not undervolted. Otherwise it's great, would recommend over the other two kernels I've reviewed.

Comments: Noticed that it goes a lot faster than the stock kernel. A lot lot faster. Battery life is much better than stock if you undervolt. There's also no need to pay AT&T for their tethering service. I LOVE THE BACKLIGHT OMG sooo much. Just not so much that you have to download an app to enable it.

Place to Download: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887315
Also download the included Voltage Control app.
Look at/download the most recent version.

speedmod-k13a-500hz

I just flashed this kernel today using SGS kernel. So far it seems to slightly enhance my experience over the older speedmod I had.

Im running this on Serendipity 5.6

This kernel/ROM combo is absolutely amazing. The incredible speed of which everything loads on the kernel, along with Serendipity's streamlined experience is wicked fast. All quickness from speedmod just gets magnified by Serendipity's hack to the Captivate's modem, where now my phone can access the HSPA+ backhaul network AT&T has been establishing the past couple years.

No overclock, but the speed almost seems like it does.

The awesome speeds and wonderful support this kernel receives just adds up to a great kernel.

You can try going into the download mode. (hold both volume buttons and then turn it on) and then choose clear cache and reinstall packages. If that does not work, you may have to reinstall using odin. Sometimes theres a hiccup and the rom or kernel doesn't load correctly.

I did what u told me but still the same problem. I tried speedmod tar, zip and CWM but stiil the same problem. May be is something that I suppose to do before I flash this kernel. I used SGS, ODIN and CWM to flash the speedmod. I does not matter what speedmod version I try to install. Thank u for the help.
