On another forum I think someone said they couldn't get kies to work. They called att and one of the reps said that they could connect from an att store and download froyo. Don't know how true that is but I plan to find out if I can never get kies to work and there's no work around

How is froyo different? Flash 10.1 and also the speeds that the phone works will be faster.  Big Smile

Ok you guys samsung emailed me back. They confirmed the version of kies that's out is not made for US handsets.  They are going to release a version for US handsets and hopefully that will be less of a pain in the butt lol

Hello All,
I have some issues to ask about. When I try to get PC to link up using Kies, I get a message reading "connection only available in idle screen, close running applications". Can anyone tell me what this means or how to get around it. I don't want to close all apps. I have a lot of apps that I believe need to stay running to operate correctly. If I am mistaken, please let me know. (such as More Icons Widget, Ultra Keyboard, App Categories, Norton Security, Switch Pro Widget etc.)

Also, when I try to connect to the PC using "mass storage",  all I get is the PC chiming as if it's connected but it wont show up. If I place the phone in "ask on connection", it will ask but not connect. I have tried it with the settings in USB debugging and in stay awake and all combinations of these. I cant get the PC and phone to play nice.

Side notes:
I use A-home. (have tried all this with android home page as well)
Have windows 7 pro, 64 bit, HP Pavilion.
              Have tried all USB ports
Still use 2.1, have "not" installed Froyo (just not ready)
              Anything I missed, please ask

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

When you select mass storage and hear the chime, you need to pull down the black notification bar at the top of your phone screen, tap the "usb" notification then select "mount".  The internal sd & external sd will show up in your Windows Explorer as two separate drives.  Keep your phone in debug mode.

Thanks Mommehk, that seems to have worked. I must have missed a step there. Had tried the pull down and "mount" but must not have had it in Debugging mode. Now I'll try to repeat this to make sure it works.

Now what about the issue with Kies mode? Still getting the other error message. Do I have to close all of my apps to use Kies?

To be able to connect to Kies, your device have to be back on the Samsung's default TWLauncher.

Temporary closing all running apps will not harm the operation of your device, so close them before connecting to Kies. You can restart them again after disconnecting from Kies.

Hi  Big Smile
I finally got my Captivate and Kies to work.
After many hours of reading forums in different places, I found one that made sense and tried it.
Supposedly there is an internal error in the Captivate...
1) unmount sd card
2) format sd card
3) mount sd card
That is ALL I did, and it worked.

Keep in mind if you have pictures and such on there now, you will lose them unless you find a different way to save them.
Hope this helps someone like ti did me.

In fact, you can just "Unmount" the sd card and connect to Kies. Don't have to format it, saving your pictures and such.  Big Smile

wow, that's something I wouldn't have thought to do. My line of thinking would be, how can you work with files and make changes with the card "un-mounted".
I'll give it a try when I get ready to hook up the phone again.
Thanks Omnian.

Well I'll be, it worked. I did just that and when I maximized Kies I clicked on "device connection guide". It went through the connection prompts and then hooked up. I'll try it again later to be sure wasn't a fluke. Thanks bandaid.
