On Tuesday, I went in and updated my Captivate to 2.2 Froyo without any issues. Except a few things here, I haven't notice much of a differents being on the 2.2 vrs the 2.1. For me the Capitivate has been a great phone with very little issues to deal with (nothing that a reboot couldn't handle).

After the upgrade, everything was still there (I did back up my phone using "My Backup Pro"). I only had to reconfigure my desktop (this was not an issue at all).

However, I am noticing a little more response from my phone.

I have done it twice all ready to the same phone from a windows xp machine and a windows 7 machine, both using the Kies from samsung and neither one had an issue. Will be doing the wife's phone over the weekend.

Now on my phone, I use it for the different roms and have each time taken it back to stock 2.1 with odin3 and then did the master clear after that. Then did the upgrade to 2.2 and no problem.

Faster boot up for one thing and other apps that I have seen from the other roms are with it also.

binary, kies, roms ......if all this sounds greek to me should I not try upgrading my phone?

is there a step by step 2.2 for dummies guide somewhere?
do I have to be rooted?
how do I back up my phone before I attempt?
ok you get the idea

as a geek, I've looked at the official update process, and it's really waaaay too risky for most people to attempt. the way samsung is updating your phone through kies is error-prone, and if you do hit an error at any step in the process, you will brick your phone. I really would suggest that you just bring the phone in and let a professional do it if you're not tech savvy enough.

look, even the rooting/installing custom software is less risky than doing the official update (there are less points of failure, and only two points of failure lead to total bricking, compared to the entire official update process being a point of failure), so you know there's something wrong with the picture.

my best bet would be to contract samsung customer support (they're friendlier, more knowledgeable, and better at actually solving technical issues than shrugging or giving you a refurbished phone) and have them walk you through the process, so if your phone does brick, at least they'll fix and upgrade for you for free, tho you'll have to wait two weeks.

Put an ad on craigslist and title it Samsung Capitivate Upgrade Help or FROYO Help, etc.
