Sharing what I think I know:
Installed Froyo 2.2 Feb 26.  Paired with BlueAnt S4. Was not able to initiate a call through the blueAnt car speakerphone.  After 3 days of calls to Samsung, AT&T & BlueAnt, Samsung level 3 support acknowledged the handsfree voice calling through bluetooth device is not a supported feature.  Not to worry though;  they will fix it soon in version 2.2.1

and what are the chances we'll ever see 2.2.1?  maybe they should start promising it now, so we'll get it by christmas.

Soooooo ... I bought a Captivate in July 2010 because I lost my Xenon overboard (I live on my boat) and I was promised that the blue tooth voice calling would be available by the end of Sept 2010 (didn't happen). Then it was the end of Dec 2010... still nothing .. and NOW!!!! Froyo 2.2 has arrived !! Wooo Hooooo !!!   I have been more than patient !!
2.2 is Horse $#!+ ...
I still have a great pocket computer but a $#!++^ fone!!! My old Motorola flip phone is still a better phone than this thing !!! I NEED to be able to initiate a call from my headset. I have been able to do it with every dumb phone I have had for the last 8 years. Now that I have a smart phone, I find that it is a piece of crap as a phone! Samsung/Google get your $#!+  together or a lot of us will dump this crap and go back to reliable dumb phones! But HEY !!!  I can get about 10,000 great ringtones and apps up the everlovin wazooo .. Ain't that just grand for a phone?!?!?!?

California has a law against using a cell phone in the car by the driver unless it is hands-free.  The Captivate cannot be used hands-free, therefore, it cannot legally be used in a car by the driver in CA.
Now, if everyone would just get together we could bring down enough pressure on at&t to get this phone fixed.  The problem is, as Americans, we have the poorest record on earth of getting together as a group and fighting back...we are just inherently lazy, I guess.    You can just be that the head of at& mobility we have this phone fixed in 10 days if he got 10,000 letters from users.
BTW, I have that person's name and address if anyone is interested.

I moved over from Verizon to AT&T to the Captivate thinking that it was as good a phone as the Facinate.  Then little problems crop up.  The biggest one is the Bluetooth issue.  Just can't understand why it can't be a easy fix.  My Blueant T2 is capable but the phone can't.  Promised by AT&T that 2.2 should fix and now we are promised to wait until 2.2.1.  Vlingo was touted to add the feature but can't seem to get it to work either.  Maybe someone else has some ideas as to a work around.
I do like the idea about California residents, plus many others if legislators have their way, to contact AT&T and Samsung to see if things can be speeded up.  Since I am new here is there a poll we could start and then forward the results to the powers to be?

Same here... Captivate 2.2, ordered Samsung Modus 6450,  added Vlingo, still no hands free bluetooth. Every other phone I ever had was handsfree capable...the most expensive phone is not. But I think AT&T has the option of allowing this app., because the Facinate, which is Verison's version of the Captivate has Nuance, and my other phone, which is a Samsung Mythic, has Nuance. If Nuance works on Verison it would work on AT&T...we should send those letters to AT&T.

Linda S.

Each vendor, at&t, Verizon, T Mobile, etc., customize the phones.  at&t has inadvertently blocked this feature.   I got a note from Blueant tech support telling me that they have heard from many Captivate customers with exactly the same issue.

Actually, there are two issues.  First, the phone does not acknowledge when you hit the "call" button on your headset.  Second, even if you load some voice dialing app on your phone it won't work with Bluetooth because the audio path between the phone and headset is broken.  This is the same issue when trying to use Google Navigation and get it to speak to you on your Bluetooth headset.

If you are interested, Ralph de la Vega is the President & CEO of at&t.  He is based in Atlanta.  I have his address but not on this computer.  If anyone wants it please let me know and I will post it.

That sounds like a very good idea.  Let's send the person in charge a lot of notices, respectful always, that we would like this feature available on our phones.  I was told early on that it was an AT&T issue so maybe that would help us all.  Thank you for your help.

I wrote to Ralph del la Vega, the President of at&t Mobility, and told him about the problems with this phone.  His office contacted me yesterday and told me to go pick out any other comparable phone (read this: not a iPhone) and they will trade with me.  They are aware of the voice dialing issue.  I have two HTC Inspire phones coming.

I had no interest in iPhones anyhow which seems to confuse them. :-)

I thought I would add a note to this thread just for the record and to help others who are looking for voice dialing through Bluetooth on Samsung Android phones.

You can not voice dial through Bluetooth on a Samsung Captivate (I have a Rogers i896), nor apparently the newer Samsung cell phones because this functionality is not enabled (or probably taken out) of the Samsung Android firmware.

This is a Samsung issue because voice dialing over Bluetooth was announced by Google starting with Android 2.2 (Froyo), which I have on my Rogers i896 Captivate. Since others have posted that this is the same for the AT&T i897 with Android 2.2 - the finger points back to Samsung for not including this in their customized phone firmware for the phones that they deliver to Rogers or AT&T.

Samsung Support will tell you that this functionality "is not available in the firmware" implying that this is a Google Android issue. What they will NOT say is that they specifically took it out of their phone software.

What I can tell you is that people have "reflashed" their cell phone ROMs with customized versions of Android 2.2 and have been able to do voice dialing over Bluetooth. What this says is that the functionality is there in the Android software --- Samsung is withholding it from you.

Why? --- Your guess is as good as mine.

Today I have ran "Firmware Upgrade" via Kies and to my utter surprise it installed me a Gingerbread! (Originally I bought mu i896 it with Froyo 2.2 in Aug 2011)

So now I have 2.3.3 GINGERBREAD.UXKH2

And - true to the word - voice dialing via bluetooth is now working even when using a preinstalled voice dialer.

I am happy Happy

Get yours upgraded

I'm a little late to this party, but I thought I'd add my 2 cents worth.

I have Cognition 4.5.3 on my Captivate and have been able to use the voice dialing feature in my Parrot Mini Slim BT car speakerphone.

However, it appears the Parrot is pining for the fjords, so I'm shopping for a new in-car unit.  I won't get another Mini Slim because I don't like how you never know if the thing is turned on or off.   Angry

I've been considering the BlueAnt S4 and the Jabra Drive.  The S4 may work with the rooted Captivate, but the Drive lacks caller ID, so that may rule that one out.

Any other suggestions for a good in-car unit?
