I have an extremely irritating problem with my Samsung Captivate.

It randomly turns itself off. Regardless of how charged the battery is. To give a scale of the problem, I have noticed this behavior 14 times since Friday afternoon - and to be fair it would probably would be happening more if i'd notice sooner and turn it on again.

It happens when the phone is idle (which makes it useless as an alarm clock) and also when the phone is active. Since friday, I have not been able to have a phone conversation on it for more than about 45 seconds before I notice that the person I'm talking with is not responding, and I check only to see that my phone is actually OFF.

I installed the system update, checked to see that the battery and sim card are in securely, nothing seems to help. A quick search online shows that a number of people are having this (or similar) problem, but nobody seems to have a solution. Some people have suggested that it may be related to live wallpapers, but I do not use those. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hello and welcome to the forums.   Big Grin

Maybe just a battery issue, maybe a faulty unit, not sure right off.  Have you tried calling Samsung support yet?

If the battery is seated snugly then it sounds like you've got faulty phone.  Have you tried to check if the battery is slightly loose inside the case; like you shake it around and see if the battery comes away from the terminals enough for the phone to lose power?

Not sure where you stand in the 30 day return policy, or if you have insurance, but I think you might want to consider taking it back and exchanging it.  Also, Was this happening before the update occurred?

Just got my SGS 4 days ago and my phone has been doing the same thing since day 1. Just random times it turns itself off. Called Samsung, no help. But then I emailed the tech support and they responded saying it was moving up the chain of command to check for software update fixes. So I dunno. Sucks though because I love the phone

trade it in.  get a new one since you've only had it for 4 days.

I am on my SECOND Samsung Captivate and this one is worse than the last.  It shuts off constantly!  I have been on the phone with AT&T Android specialists for the last 10 days.  I want to throw this phone through the window.  I have one more defective return and then they will allow me to select another phone as a replacement.  Good luck to all you Captivate owners out there.  Please call ATT to report this problem if it happens to you too.  They will not do anything about the issue unless the problem is reported by a large number of users!

There is now a solution:  Captivate Keep Alive app.  Just posted on AppBrain and it really seems to work for me.  Spread the word.

This clearly suggests it's a software issue. It started happening to me after I upgraded to Froyo. It seems to be tied to alarms and calendar notification. It happens to me every day right after my morning alarm. I'll try downgrading to 2.1 this weekend and see if the problem goes away.

Have spent the last 2 weeks with this problem.  We've reset the phone twice to factory specs, and it still turned off from standby.  I received a new battery today and it still turned off.  The Android rep today had me factory reset and install Android Antivirus.  No shutdowns since then.  Of course, I haven't downloaded any apps except for antivirus, app killer and Facebook.  They are still sending me a new phone.  The Captivate Keep Alive app worked some, but it ate lots of battery.  I believe it's app-related, but not sure.

You could try what the person who posted above you did^^

Sounds like this is becoming a more prevalent problem.  I would contact Samsung and see if you can't get them to replace the phone for you.  There should be a 1 year warranty with them.  If not, get an insurance plan put onto your plan pronto and make a claim.

I have read around the net that this is a common problem. Changing the battery did not work. Cleaning the battery and phone contacts did not work. Resetting back to stock did not work. I have read where some people are on their 4th or 5th Captivate.

My daughters friend got one and it was fine the first couple of weeks and now it keeps turning itself off. She doesnt get all  phone calls and text messages.

If it's during your first 30 days you should return it and get another new one other wise if it's after your 30 days you will most likly get a refurbished Captivate. What sucks is when the phone starts this after the 30 days. I would fight long and hard for a new one. I shouldn't get a used refurbished phone. I paid for a new phone and I should get a new one that works like it should.

I too have read that the Keep Alive app will work but that's more of a work around than a true fix for the problem.

This is an issue that I've been having too.  For me, it seems like it would happen at almost the exact time every day, at least once a day, but never more than twice.  I had been thinking that it was a re-booting feature, but I see that there may be more to it than that...

Got my Captivate about 2 weeks ago and after a week I started havintg this same problem a few times a day.  Went to Best Buy today where I bought it and first they thought my memory cache was too full so they deleted a bunch of stuff.  Problem happened again before I got to my car so I went back in.  The guy thought maybe i had a virus from one of the apps I downloaded and told me to try deleting some apps.

The repair guy also said I could try a hard reset on the phone but after reading the posts on here I have a feeling that wont help either.  I love this phone when it works but I have 2 weeks left to return the phone and I am seriously thinking about returning it and getting an Iphone instead.

OMG I'm sorry to hear about the power off issues so many are having. I've had my Captivate for 5 months now and it's only turned off on 3 rare occasions. Few and far between. I won't complain. I hope a real fix comes out for all you good people.  Sad
