Having same issue... turns itself off after after being idle overnight or for a long time.  I do not want to replace the phone, frustrating that Samsung hasn't fixed this issue

i have the very same problem. with my first phone it will just turn off like at least 3 times a week and so i called the warranty support center and android specialist... they were not able to do anything so they sent me a replacement. i got the phone right before christmas... and just yesterday my phone turned off again and whenever i try to turn it on i won't even get to the part where i have to unlock my sim. so since yesterday i am not able to use my phone at all. they will send me a 2nd replacement that i should be recieving in 2 business days. and if the problem happens again you will be allowed to choose another model.

i suggest that if you have this problem even if it just turned off a couple times just call AT&T right away because from my experience it will just be worse. i love the phone but it is very inconvenient to have this problem.. now i have to borrow someone else's phone.

I took my phone into my local AT&T Device Support Center and they were aware of the turns-itself-off issue and replaced my phone in 10-minutes, no questions asked.  The very nice AT&T rep says that newly-manufactured models do not have the problem.  I hope she is right.

This shutting off is getting to be a pain. Mine shut off on me 4 times during the day while I was at work. I may try the reset and see if that helps. I take it that I will need to root again after the reset?

My wife and I have 2 Captivates...  Both were fine, then we updated to the official Froyo update.  Mine has been pretty good, but my wife says hers is turning off quite a bit.  I don't know but this definitely sounds like a software issue.  One thing I did was set my wifi to stay on even when screen blanked..not sure if that is helping or not.. we'll see...

The app mentioned above called Keep Alive has worked for me.

The Keep Alive app made no difference for me.  My phone sometimes shuts off 4 or 5 times in a day, which is ridiculous!  It seems to me that the shutdowns start as soon as I do anything dealing with data - any kind of internet use.  I've tried leaving WiFi on and leaving it off.  If anything, WiFi seems to make the problem worse, but it might not have anything to do with it.  I'll be trashing this in January as soon as I am eligible for an upgrade.  Maybe a nice HTC.  No more Samsung for me.  I no longer have any faith in this brand.

Mine turns itself off only after I have given it a full charge AND used any app on the phone. After flashing Cyanogen ROM the shut offs have reduced down to zero or one per full charge.

If I charge the phone and disconnect from charging before a full charge it doesn't shut off on it's own.
After flashing Cyanogen ROM I now must remove the battery and reinsert it before powering back up.

Get this...I've had this problem for 6 months (the phone worked flawlessly for the 1st 6 months). I contacted Samsung support to try to get this fixed before the warranty expired.  So first thing that had me do was the factory reset, which I did.  Didn't help.  The phone was running Android 2.1.  I never bothered to update it because others on this forum had tried it and it didn't help.  So I get them to agree to service the phone under warranty.  This is what the email said after they worked on the phone:

Original Problem:
TECHNICAL INQUIRY - POWER - INTERMITTENT POWER DOWN

Problem found:
RX AUDIO - SPEAKER

Solution:
REPLACED COMPONENT

So, you send a phone back in with the complaint that the phone shuts off at random times and what do they do?  Replace the speaker!

The phone came back with Android 2.2 or whatever the latest OS is.  Had it for 1/2 day with no new apps installed.  It has shut down twice!  I'm going back to my LG Incite (a wimply little phone, but at least it doesn't shut down).  In January, I'm eligible for an upgrade, which will be ANYTHING BUT SAMSUNG.

Speaker?!?! Idiots!

My phone was new in late 2010.  I used setcpu to fix my problem
download it from the market, give it root access.
Set up a charging profile, 1000max 200 min
Set up a Screen off profile, 1000 max, 200 min
enable these.
set the front page scaling to 1000max, 200 min.
Click to set on boot.

This has fixed all my restarting problems with my captivate

Sounds like you had a different problem if your phone was "restarting".  Mine just shuts off.

it doesn't hurt to try this. It hasn't happened in so long, I don't remember if it was shutting down or restarting. I remember it happened at the worst times and was extremely annoying when it was every 2-3 hours.

Agreed.  I'll look into this.  Thanks for the suggestion.

So, I finally got around to trying to root the phone.  It had Froyo 2.2 installed when it came back from Samsung repair.  So far, I haven't had any luck rooting it.  Tried Z4root, but it just hangs during the permanent root process.  What is the best way to root 2.2?

Just thought I'd update this thread with my latest findings.  I've discovered that WiFi no longer works.  It connects to my router and I can even ping it from my computer, but it is not able to do anything internet-related unless I turn off WiFi.  This may be the result of the incomplete rooting I mentioned.  I'm not that concerned about it at this point.

But here is the interesting  point I wanted to make about the shutdown problem...if I keep the phone in my shirt pocket, it never shuts off!  If I put it in my belt holster, it will almost certainly shut down multiple times.  Now, I'm aware the buttons may be getting pressed while it is in the belt holster, but I was not aware of a button combination that would actually shut the phone off without it making a sound (or a vibration - the phone also vibrates when it is shutdown normally).  Another thing to mention is that this holster has a permanent magnet in the flap to keep it closed.  So what is going on here?  The phone shouldn't be susceptible to a simple flap magnet, should it?  Maybe it has to do more with the orientation...in the holster the phone is horizontal.  In my shirt pocket, it is vertically oriented.

The phone has worked fine all week in my shirt pocket...even after leaving it on the charger all night.  That's fine for winter weather, but most tee shirts don't have pockets.

I'm eligible for an upgrade after January 8th.  Should this problem make me at all concerned with Samsung products, such as the Galaxy S II?
