I'm writing this from my captivate so bear with random capitalization that may occur. Just this weekend my power/ lock/unlock button has been acting really goofy. It wont always wake the phone up to the lock screen. It also wont always shut the screen off. Sometimes if I push it to shut the screen off it goes straight to the power down menu. Other times while my phone is just sitting and charging, the screen will turn on automatically and even go to the power down menu. If I remove the battery and replace it there are times it starts up with the ATT screen as soon as the battery makes contact. I've had  cognition 4 on my phone since April with no problems. So I feel this is hardware. What can I do?

Have you tried taking the phone apart to see if there is some lint or something stuck under the button causing it to now make a connection?  I know there are a few you tube videos that walk through the disassembly of a Cappy.

Other than that, are you still covered under the manufacturer's warranty or have insurance on the phone?  If still under manuf. warranty, you could try and get them to fix it but you would have to send it to them (and make sure that you return it to stock before that: ROM, battery, unrooted, etc otherwise they may say that you voided the warranty on it).  Or file an insurance claim on the phone and get it replaced (note: replacement phone may be a 'refurbished' phone and not a completely NEW, unused phone.)

If you don't know whats going on I don't recommend disassembling the cappy to look for lint.. I would just Odin One Click back to stuck if your build 1010 or lower if not use the harder method which is basically actual odin to select individual files and revert to eclair-update1..  if your unsure just text me.. but i would do that and get a replacement if your sure its a hardware issue as long as your warranty covers it... if not well... disassemble and look for lint i guess..
