Hi,
We are new Samsung Captivate owners...my husband and I each have one..the same problem on BOTH of the phone. We are not sure if it is something we are doing or a problem with the phone? We use AT&T they could not help us...we called Samsung today and they couldn't help us...(she had my husband factory reset his phone) now he has to start all over from the beginning and the problem is the same...we called the manufacture of the SD card we have and they couldn't help us..we have the correct card...
PROBLEM...
in the setting it recognizes the card as an INTERNAL 16Gig SD card...you can NOT format or MOUNT it...
We have been told it should be saying an EXTERNAL SD card...
We are only able to put something on it by hooking up the USB cable and put it on there that way. Not able to move anything there through the phone as it says not enough memory as it is NOT reading it as the EXTERNAL card.
The Samsung girl (after saying to factory reset) said to format the card and that would solve our problem!!!!! It is hard to believe her since she choose to have him do the FACTORY RESET FIRST!!!
I tried to format the card but my card reader is not compatible for the micro card..she said I could go buy one for $5!!!!
We downloaded the APP2SD application and that didn't work either same message...not enough memory. The card is a 16G and it says there are 13G available on it with nothing on the card....
We are using android 2.2...
I did a search on this forum and found a couple of posts with this problem, said a lot simpler than I am saying but NO ANSWER...
Can anyone help?
Thanks

PS..we both have refurbished phones...

So when you go into Settings>>>SD Card and Phone Storage you should have 3 different slots:

2 for SD cards and both of them say "Internal SD Card"
1 for "Internal phone storage"  ?

Is this correct or do you show something different?

Are you able to mount/unmount the card that shows up when you put the external sd card into the phone?  And when you connect the phone with the card in it to a pc, are you able to mount that so that you can use the usb cable to move files back and forth?

Hi,
Under settings SD card and phone storage there are three areas:
1. EXTERNAL SD card
   Total space unavailable
   Available space unavailable
   Mount SD card GRAYED OUT
   Format SD card GRAYED OUT
2. Internal SD card
   Total space 13.03GB
Available space unavailable 2.93GB I have some photos on there when I moved them from my computer via the USB cable
   Format SD card
3. Internal Phone Storage
   Available space unavailable .44GB
=====================================
I am NOT able to mount/unmount the card...I can use the USB cable to move files back and forth from my computer but can not mount..
There are places in the phone that say it is an INTERNAL SD card and other places that refer to it as an EXTERNAL card.
If I look in the Galary it shows CAMERA and EXTERNAL SD???
Thank you

So the internal SD card is the 16 gb that the phone automatically comes with built-in.  And it sounds like that is where you have also been moving all of your photos based on your last post.  And that would make sense that you can't mount or format it as this would eff up your phone if you tried to do that...

As for the external card, you and your husband have these little (bout the size of your pinky nail) cards that you can put into the back of the phone (the slot right next to where the SIM card goes)?  Sorry for asking, just want to make sure because some people have been confusing the Internal SD card for one that you can take in and out of the phone.

If the info you wrote above is showing when that external card is in the slot on the phone then you either have a bad external card or there is something wrong with the reader on your phone and you should look into getting a replacement. Hopefully you are still under warranty with ATT and/or Samsung.

The card looks like this:

Yes, our card looks just like that picture. Last night I saw a place to format the internal SD card that I though was the one like in the picture only called internal instead of external...when I formated it...all my pictures on the phone disappeared!. When I was in the Gallery there were TWO places pictures were...CAMERA and external SD..BOTH were lost...I think you maybe be right..the reader in the phone is bad or the cards...don't think it is the SC cards but this is a refurbished phone so that may be the problem. I will contact AT&T Monday..both phones are supposed to be warrantied for 90 days...will see what happens.
Thank you for you input and help...maybe refurbished is NOT the way to go????

Many get lucky with refurbed phones, but there is always the chance that the problem was never actually resolved when the phone was sent back for a number of different reasons.

Do us a  favor, open the back and take out the battery.  On the IMEI sticker there are a bunch of different numbers and barcodes and such.  Once number in particular is the build number; it's a 4 digit number about midway down the sticker (usually 10**).  What is that number for you and your husband (don't post the IMEI, that's no bueno ok)?  There are some builds that were fraught with issues and it could be that you got one of those refurbed unfortunately.

Hopefully you are still within the 90 day warranty and get ATT to replace them again.  Were you initially given refurbed models (obviously cheaper to start with) or did you get them as replacements to new captivates with other problems?  THe reason I ask is that (usually) when you get to the 3rd set of replacement phones with ATT you can request to
A. either trade them in for NEW comparable phones (only exclusion I know of is for new iPhones)
B. complain and get NEW captivates if you want to stay with Samsung phones.

Also, invest in a reader that will let you connect the external micro sd card directly to the computer so that you can figure out if it's bad or not.

Sorry you lost all of your pictures and hope that you and your husband are able to get this resolved quickly.

Thank you for the follow up...
I have removed the batteries and have both of those build numbers:
my husband's is: 10.10
mine is: 10.08

AT&T is on my list of phone calls first thing tomorrow (6.27.11) morning.
This is the FIRST phone....we did an early upgrade because we were not able to even see the keyboard on our other phone so they let us upgrade 6 months early but NOT to the iPhone.
We will stay with the Samsung and insist on a new one.

Thanks

Hi,
Spoke with AT&T this morning and new reconditioned phones are on the way..up to 6 days...they are accepting our back under the 30 day part of the warranty because we were complaining since we got them. They were great I hope the new reconditions ones are as great. The HUGE bill they sent us they fix as well took of every charge that I questioned...back to our normal bill...We have been with them for 11 years and can't say anything bad about them, YET (smile).
Thanks again for the help here, I will post when we get the new phones. Fortunately, I learned on THIS FORUM how to get a backup program (Android Manager Sync Wifi) I put it on the phone and the PC and we have both our phones backed up so it should make getting up and running easier...thanks for that info too.

Hi,
Our new phones arrived today...after attempting to get them setup we found out the problem with the SD cards!!!! They are SPRING action cards!!! We spoke with AT&T, Tiger Direct (where we bought them) the card manufacturer (Transend) and Samsung. NOT one of them ever mentioned did you put them in correctly they are spring action cards!!!!! Today when I was putting one in my husband new phone I dropped the card and when I went to put it in I push hard to be sure it went in didn't want to drop it again and I felt the spring load!!! So I went and check and there it was recognized in the phone....so I did my phone as well and it worked...
We then attempted to put on our backups done with Android Manager Sync but it didn't go on properly and not sure what we did wrong there.

I move a bunch of stuff to the SC card put the icons on my desktop so I could access the programs and THOUGHT I was fine. But, I shut the phone off for awhile to charge it and when I turned the phone on I get a Message that flashes at the bottom of the screen:

SU NOT FOUND and then goes away...All the icons on the desktops that are on the SC card are GONE....

Can anyone tell me what this is and how to correct it?
Thanks

Well, SU would refer to "SuperUser" which is one tool you use when you root your phone to allow for complete administrative privileges on the phone.  I know nothing about the Android Manager Sync so not sure why that didn't work properly for you.

When you say you
I move a bunch of stuff to the SC card put the icons on my desktop so I could access the programs and THOUGHT I was fine.
do you mean that you put the apps onto the SD card and were trying to run them from the SD card with shortcuts you put on the various homepages?  If so are you sure that all the apps are compatible with "apps2sd".  If that's not what you mean, can you explain it more please.

Glad to hear that the issue was not with the phones or sd card and that all is figured out now.  Sorry we couldn't have come up with the "are you sure it's in correctly" question to begin with!  Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Once again Thank you for the reply...
Yes, when I say desktops I was referring to Homepages! I have since learned that a reference to desktops makes others think I am referring to my computer. So, I will now use the proper terminology for the cell phone and say Homepages. Thank you

Yes, I had applications on the SD card and I wanted to put the icons on a homepage to run them. Samsung has informed me that this was a problem in the last version of the operation system and continued to be a problem in the 2.2 version. Can't do that. You have to go into the applications area to click on the icon once you have the application on the SD card. The icon will stay there until you turn the phone off and when you turn it back on it disappears.

Here is where I stand right now! I am in the process of trouble shooting and not having a total understanding on how this operating systems works! But, other tech people don't seem to know either EVEN SAMSUNG....!!!!!

About the "su not found" message I spent a total of 2 hrs and 15 mins on the telephone with AT&T and Samsung...wow...nobody could even tell me what it meant let alone how to fix it.

Well, while I was on the telephone with Samsung 2nd level tech I found out the problem...seems as though my phone was still connected to my COMPUTER!!!! When I used the Android Manager Sync program to put a backup of my phone on to the phone I did not disconnect properly. While I was on hold I figured it out and told the tech when he returned to tell me I should factory reset my phone!!!!!!! The su stands for STORAGE UNIT...

Somehow I have a problem disconnecting from the computer. I use the windows icon in the tray to disconnect but it WILL not disconnect it tells me that something is still using the connection! So I have to shut down my computer and them disconnect the phone...Husband has the same problem the phone show CONNECTED when he has been able to safely remove device!! Any suggestions here?

The other issue I have now and maybe somebody can tell me if this CAN be DONE or if I am spinning my wheels?

I have the SD card working....I want to put photos (jpgs) on the SD card. I can not find out how to do that. When I hook up via USB I am not able to locate a file for SD card to put the photos into. There is one called external SD and that is the internal card on the phone. I have photos there that are used on my contact list for pictures of the people.

In the GALLERY they show up as images on the EXTERNAL SD card when the MICRO CARD is NOT installed....Once I put the micro SD card in the phone and go to the Gallery..the photos show up as broken images (grayed out with a lightning bolt in the upper right corner).

I have tried this in the new phone and my original phone same thing... I must be doing something wrong! My husbands phone seems fine with the exception, he does not have any jpgs on his SD card only applications... In the Gallery he has Camera and external SD that shows the photos on his contact that are located on his PHONE not the SD card...very confusing...

Thanks again for any input on this. I plan on spending this entire weekend on this phone issue to see what I can figure out.

Since I received so much help and support here I though I should at least follow up with the GOOD NEWS...

SUCCESS! I am using the NEW replacement phone, I factory reset it and started from the beginning...
EVERYTHING is working PERFECTLY...
I am using Windows XP professional on my computer and to disconnect from the phone I must FIRST go to my computer and right click on the virtual drive created for the phone and do EJECT then go to the icon in the tray to safely remove the device and that works perfectly.
I have found the folders for the external SC card and the internal SD and the camera so I know where to put photos...I have learned how to move them in the phone as well..

The disappearing icons from the homepages can NOT be fixed it is a software issue when something is placed on the SC card you can not keep an icon on a homepage it will disappear when you reboot the phone.

ALL IS WELL...thank you so much. I really enjoy this forum I am here daily reading and anytime I can help anyone I will do so...
Happy 4th to everyone.

Xp Pro -- well that might be an explanation for at least a piece of the puzzle!

Glad to hear you have success...this really is a great phone, and plenty of great peeps here to provide help and info.  Don't let it all overwhelm you, because there really is A LOT you can do with the Cappy.

I'd recommend starting a new post for the Rooting question.  Only that way, we keep the threads separate since they are covering 2 very different subjects.
