Is there some reason that the included cable that is used to charge the phone can't be used to connect to a computer for data transfer? My owner's manual mentions an optional data cable in a couple of places. On my other Android phone the same cable is used for both.

Not that I can think of, unless some phones come with just the charging cable that isn't actually a USB cable...

Mine just came with an outlet adapter that the USB cable plugs into and then I can unplug it from that adapter and straight into the computer, easy as pie!

Mine has the same cable and adapter as yours. So it seems that it would go into the USB of the computer. But why I asked this question, is only because in the users manual, it says that to transfer data to/from a PC, you have to use and OPTIONAL data cable. That makes it sound like the included cable can't be used for data transfer even though it would fit any USB connection on your PC. Have you used that cable to transfer any photos or anyrhing?

That is the data cable also. It is what you plug into usb port for all data transfer (up and down). Your computer should recognize it as a "removable drive" type or you can download Kies from Samsung website for a program that manages the interface.

Like llamaben said.  Ignore the manual, it was probably originally written in Chinese first, then some Euro language and then in English so something was lost in translation.  If you do indeed have a USB cable with you phone, then that's the cable to use.

have you even tried plugging it into the computer yet?  That would be the really easy test to ensure that it does indeed work; if you plug it in and the computer goes "New hardware detected" or some such thing then it's the right cable..... HUH?

I was a little wary about just plugging it in.............although it's obviously a USB cable.....but I didn't want to possibly damage the phone because of what was in the users manual about needing an "optional" USB data cable. Sort of made it sound like there was some special cable needed that the included cable wouldn't work. I'll give it a try now, since the phone is still under warranty anyway.
Thanks everyone.

Having read the same in the manual, and having no success plugging the phone into 2 different computers, I thought the same and ordered a "data cable" for $10 to see if that would work.  It won't be here for a week.

When I plug in using the included cable, the phone prompts for the type of connection (Kies, media player, mass storage) but the computer never "notices" the connected device no matter which I pick.  This is the same regardless of computer, one a Win7 Home Premium and the other a Win7 Professional.  Rebooting the phone and computers makes no diff.  What's going on?

rf:

When you connect, select "mass storage".  Your phone should go back to the home screen.  Pull down the black status bar at the top of the screen...there will be a notice saying USB connected.  Tap that, then on the next screen that pops up, select "mount".  Your computer will see 2 different drives -- the internal SD card & your external SD card (assuming you've added one).

Incorrect!

There is a difference in Micro USB cables.

The cable that came with my phone wouldn't do data.
I went to Best Buy and they said I need a data cable.

Phone would connect fine to computer with the data cable.

Mine work'ed perfectly fine using the supplied "charging" cable.  When i  woke up the phone there was a menu to choose which way to connect (this is based on my settings for USB connections).  At first it only showed the internal sd, but when i did like MommehK said of unmount and remount and it then showed both.

Then the cable that came with your phone is defective -- contact Samsung and tell them you need a part replacement, then take your cable back to Best Buy and get a refund.

mine came with a data cable, I bought a real genuine authentic AT&T charging only cable for $10.00 as well.

the data/charge cable stays with the desktop and the charge only stays in the netbook bag. (you can charge your phone off your netbook, slow but better than nothing) and then with the USB charger in the car I get in the car, plug in the phone, slide the phone into the dash and it charges as I merrily roll along.
