Many of my friends have The Bible on their phones.  Can I get at ESV of the Bible FREE for my Samsung Captivate (ATT) phone?  If so, how?

Have you tried looking on the market? A quick google search yielded this

You could also get a reader like kindle for android or amazon reader and download it through them.

As a far-left-leaning, socio-politically and theologically liberal/progressive (and probably going straight to hell, as far as my right-leaning, conservative friends are concerned) Christian, the jury's still out, for me, on the ESV.  But I completely understand its appeal; and don't fault the thread-starter for wanting a copy of it on his/her phone.

As it happens, I've done no small amount of research on this subject, and am, quite frankly, disappointed.  In the end, there's really no way to get a truly great set of Bible (and study/reference) tools onto an Android device -- at least not yet -- without spending a little money.

Pity.  It's not like pastors are rolling in dough.  The appmakers have heard of the "vow of poverty," right? [sigh]

Anyway, for the moment, the killer app is the Logos app; but it must work in harmony with a full logos software installation on a desktop/laptop PC, or with an online account...

...and you're REALLY talkin' some dollars, there!  Plus, for a left-wing dude like me, one has to actually work at it to cherrypick from Logos stuff that which isn't so theologically to the right that it grates.

Much the same can be said for most of what else is out there... the vast majority of which is so conservative that it refuses to offer the NRSV, even for a fee!  Sheesh!  We liberal/progressives really need to develop our own Bible software... something with some Spong, Coffin, Borg and Croussan in it! [grin]  And not just for the Android platform; for Windows, too.  There's literally nothing -- at least nothing serious and/or abundant -- out there which doesn't absolutely grate on liberals/progressives.

But I digress.  Sorry.

Of what's out there, Youversion is, indeed, good.  And, of course, for just the ESV, that to which swellthekitty linked us is just about perfect.  It's nice, though, to get one app which serves many purposes, and something like Youversion does that well... though it's missing some translations.

I'm kinda' liking the Cadre Bible series... though it, too, is a little conservative.  That said, Cadre does, at least, offer the NRSV... albeit the Roman Catholic Version.  It's close enough for government work, though... that is if one's okay with a commandment or two out of order; or margin notes which suggest we're saved by anything other than grace, alone, through faith, alone... and not works in any fashion whatsoever.  But, alas, I'm digressing again.  Sorry.

Olivetree (http://www.olivetree.com/) is probably best, all 'round, but tends to be expensive.

There's some other stuff out there; and if anyone would like me to share what I've found, just let me know.

I keep encouraging that Greek guy who created "The Word" for Windows to make an Adroid app, and port all the modules to it.  It, too, is largely conservative; but there's a guy in Mexico, and another guy in Europe, who've created modules for those on both ends of the philosophical spectrum; so one can, by hook or by crook, assemble a liberal/progressive-friendly Bible and study/reference set... and pretty much for free, if one works at it.

Anyway... hope that helps.

I am partial to DailyBible (free from the Market).  Its default translation is ESV, and it gives you a daily scripture.  It also has the ability to look up several other translations.
