I am not sure what this area is called. It's the default place where all your apps are stored.

Is there a way to organize them so I dont have like 8 screens to go through?  I have my home screen already set up to a few pages but I really would like to organize the remaining apps into their own folders.

So you're talking about the "apps drawer" right? The place you go when you click on the "apps button" on the home screen.

If you go into this drawer are, press on the menu button, and select view type. This should allow you to do a customizable grid and now when you press the menu button an "edit" option should be there. Now you can press and drag any app to any page you want and they don't even have to be full.

I've got pages dedicated to my most used apps and games at the front and less used items further back.

Thanks.  yes, ok. "App drawer". Cool. Interesting name.

I've already customized the apps that I use the most by moving them. That's still not reducing the number of screens I have. That's basically the intent.

I would like to move selected apps in the "app drawer", for example, to folders that i would like to create, such as Tools, Social Networking, etc.  is there an app that does this? The only workaround I have found is using an app called "smarter shortcuts" but that still doesnt reduce the number of screens I have in the "app drawer".

Depending on which version of the Firmware you have, try Long-Pressing on an icon and drag it over another.

OR

In the App Drawer screen, press the Menu button and select [Edit].

Omnian, swellthekitty already suggested the same as you. Perhaps I am confusing y'all. I want to reduce the number of screens I have, not in the home screen but within the application area or app drawer. If any of you have ever used an iPhone 3+G or iPod Touch 3+ you will know what I am talking about. Let me try to put in another way:

The Android OS has two areas where you can have the apps. The default location/App drawer and the Home Screen. You can create as many home screens as you want, AFAIK. However, you still will have your app drawer where your downloaded/installed apps are placed by default.

What I want to do is group/organize these apps, the apps in teh app drawer so I dont have as many screens to search. the home screen is where i have my most frequently used apps. but the app drawer is a mess with lots of apps and no way of grouping or organizing them into specific categories/folders.

I hope my description is a bit clear Wink Wink

Yes, I understood what you meant. iPhones don't have a Homescreen, it uses Springboard. The Android's App Drawer is something like the Apple's Springboard.

That's why I wrote:
In the App Drawer screen, press the Menu button and select [Edit].

I don't know which version of the Android's Firmware you're having, cause you didn't mention (as there are different methods with different Firmwares), so I also wrote "OR"
Depending on which version of the Firmware you have, try Long-Pressing on an icon and drag it over another.

Only thing I didn't mentioned (Sorry) is "Long-Pressing on an icon and drag it over another." IN your App Drawer (thought you'd understand). Just like you'd do with Apple's Springboard.

Please try and let me/us know whether any of those suggestions work for you.

Reason for Edit: Add a screenshot.

JUst to further clarify and perhaps help: On the stock 2.2, you are unable to add folders or "group" programs (in the program drawer) as you would on an iPhone.  The best you can do, without a third-party app (or maybe a custom ROM), is do a custom grid and organize the programs in the order you want.

Another option I can think of is to have a home screen with catagory folders and put shortcuts to your apps in the proper folder.  Thereby not using the app drawer most of the time.

I hope this helps.

Omnian, nice wallpaper and layout you have Happy
Yup, I understood what you meant about the home screen. I am aware of the long press and I can create folders but only there, not anywhere else. I want to create folders in the area where youi select "Applications".  I guess I was still clear enough in my explanation. Crying

AZTX, thanks for clarifying. That's what I suspected: There is no way of organizing the program drawer except for moving the icons (apps) around within them. It's really a pity. I would suspect in maybe future versions of the OS (mine is 2.2) it surely have this ability but I seriously doubt my Captivate will be upgradable even though I tend to keep phones for 4+ years and longer.

If you have no intention/cannot/no firmware available of upgrading, there is another way of having the ability to create folder in your App Drawer.

Goto the Market, search and install the free Go Launcher Ex. It is a very nice alternate Launcher other then TW Launcher.

With Go Launcher Ex, you not only can create Folders in the App Drawer, but you can even Hide the Icons.

Try it. I'm using it as my default Launcher.

Install it. Set it as Default. Go into your App Drawer and press your Menu button.

Now Go Launcher Ex is probably one of the most useful apps for Android I have come across. Sadly, it's causing my Captivate to lock up frequently. Since my captivate is fairly new and this hasnt happened before, I am pretty confident it's this app causing it. I have to uninstall it.  All that hard work of organizing the apps gone down the drain.  Another shame about Anroid is that there is no way I know of how to backup your device completely, like for the iPhone. I guess I really prefer and need an iPhone and not an Android afterall.  Embarrased

Shocked Har? I've been using Go Launcher since it is created, have never experience that before.

Maybe you'd like to try LauncherPro, it have the same ability too. Get the free one will do.

I dont think it's necessarily the app causing the freezing. the OS just likes to freeze a lot. If it's not one app it's another. Mind you, I am not using the LauncherPro very often now. I am getting very tired and frustrated using this device. I am pretty much just using it as a phone, not even to send SMS as it's really hard to do for me. I am just not used to typing a word and not having it automatically autocorrect correctly or display like it does on iOS.
