Are you concerned about reloading your apps after factory reset, or are you concerned about the saved data (high scores, where you are in a game, etc)?

Typically, you will not be able to restore your apps from the SD card unless you are rooted and have turned off the restriction that AT&T has placed on only getting apps from the market.  I can't tell you how to set your phone to be able to install apps from "unknown sources", but it can be done.

If you just want to get your apps back and don't need to worry about the data, you can use App List Backup by Pun Software to make a list of your apps that are installed.  You don't need root and after you reset your phone, install this app first and it will help you to get your apps back from the Android Market.  This does not require root.

If you want to restore the data as well, then you will most likely need to root your phone and install Titanium backup.  Backup your apps and data.  When you reset your phone, then you will need to root your phone again and install Titanium backup from the Market.  When you do the restore, make sure that you only restore apps that you have downloaded and their data.  If you restore system apps and/or their data, then you run the risk of making a mess of your phone if it is a different version than before the reset.

You may want to consider other apps too, like SMS Backup by Michele Valentini to make a backup of your text messages so you can restore them afterwards.
