Could it be? July on T-Mobile? AND it might be Android 2.2??

If you are plugged into the Android universe at all, you have probably read about a little rumor originating over at TmoNews about a T-Mobile initiative called Project Emerald.  These last few days have seen tons of conjecture and guesswork as to what it's all about.  After a few conversations with super-secret sources placed around the world, we've put together a short list of what we've been told.  These bits come from a rather reliable source who has yet to burn us so we feel good publishing them.

The handset will be the Samsung Captivate.  However, this will not be an all-out exclusive deal.  T-Mobile will be one of four carriers to provide the phone, something we've heard before.  With the Droid Incredible and HTC EVO getting a great deal of attention these last few weeks, Big Magenta has fast-tracked this phone for release the first week of July.  This also matches up with the "summer launch" we heard back at CTIA.

And...

    * The phone will be Android 2.1 but should be 2.2 when it arrives.
    * Sprint's handset will arrive later than the others
    * Somehow, the Hummingbird processor is out and the Snapdragon chip is in.
    * All but AT&T's model will have a camera flash

Kind of a bummer if the change from Hummingbird to snapdragon is true...  however if it's 2.2, well, then, all would be forgiven....

Well that's just one article. If there was more evidence of this then I might believe it. I don't think Samsung would take out the Hummingbird they bragged about it a lot a while ago.

I hope they add the flash and keep the Hummingbird A8 chip.

Why wont they just announce a U.S. date and the carriers for this phone, I need to plan ahead and not knowing is killing me, lol. Right now im stuck with my lg-vu on AT&T and I want a new phone! this better come to att or im going to look into switching companies.

I feel your pain. It's hard to make decisions - especially ones that carry a two year commitment - when you know new announcements are just around the corner.

I'm due for a new phone upgrade in July, so I'm definitely hoping for that.  If not, then I have until November before my contract is up and I can switch carriers. Of which, I will most likely be doing if there are still no good android phone on AT&T's network.

No way the Hummingbird is coming out. It's not that simple to just switch out a SoC with another one, and Samsung spent a good while boasting about the chip while at CTIA 2010 and demonstrating it working perfectly in the hands-on devices.

I saw someone quote a tmo manager from the Tmonews forum, basically said that the anouncement of the galaxy S would be early/mid july with a release in august.

Also, t-mobile has some weird unknown promo planned on june 19th, all the stores are opening early.  some are speculating its the galaxy s but I find that hard to believe.  might be the my touch slide. The same manager in NYC was quoted saying that they do not want to disrupt the release of the MTS phone by offering the high end galaxy S to close together.  his also maybe be the rumored "Project Emerald"...

It is really hard to believe that June 19th will be Galaxy S Lunching day.

They put a lot of afford to MT Slide. Galaxy S will make MT Slide as low spec device. In business mind, that is bad decision.

However, there is possibility. They could offer MT Slide as family phone with special family plan. Galaxy S will be High-end Android device.

As we know, i-Phone will come around mid June(Sprint pushs EVO, Verizon has DROID series). T-mobile needs more than MT Slide. HPSA+ would be good combination with Galaxy S as marketing.

I agree, that would be awfully quick for the galaxy S to come to the US.  This article seems much more feasible and realistic.  Goes back to a big product launch in July,...  I think it'll be July, which isn't bad.
