Hi, I'm thinking of getting myself a Captivate but not sure if I should go get an unlock one at eBay or wait till Rogers comes out.
If I get an ATT Captivate, will I have problems using it with Rogers in Canada? Will I get 3G in Canada?
Basically, I wonder if I will have problems getting the unlock AT&T version to use with Rogers here in Canada and with 3G capable.  Thks.

I know that you will have to change the settings around in the phone so it will read the rogers network as for the 3g it should but not to certain that it will work with rogers 3g if you have it in your area it all depends on when the Captivate comes out for rogers and how long you personally can wait

It seems the phone will work with Roger's 3G. Now, what about warranty and bloatware?  Is there a way to remove those settings so that AT&T don't bug me with their own software?  I heard of rooted phones. Does a rooted phone means I can install and remove any software I wish?

Have you done any reading on the forums at all?

There's an entire section devoted to rooting, what it is, how to do it, etc etc.  Information that will actually answer your questions for you.

Glad to hear that Rogers will support the Captivate, hopefully you will figure the rest out.

you have to root to have permissions to remove locked apps, but only certain apps can be removed as some are part of the systems integrity. go to forum.xda-developers.com at the top right corner click on "choose your device" a menu pops out letting you select samsung then android. a list will then appear, currently the Captivate is the second phone, click on development and look through forums for "unleash the beast." if you choose to, it will root your phone and remove all apps that can be removed safely. it then has a zip file with all the apps so you can install whichever one you still want.

alternatively, sign up for an account and use the search bar (you can't search w/o an account...actually now that i think about it, you can't download anything w/o an account anyway...well check it out, if it seems like something you would want to do then sign up, it's free n only takes about ten min.

I bought an ATT phone from eBay and used it on Rogers. I know answers to your questions.

Wait for the Rogers one.

I was able to provider-unlock, root. I had to manually set APN (internet.com, wapuser1, wap) in order to be able to use Roger's 3G network. I tried but wasn't able to remove the ATT bloatware.

LauncherPro worked with error on my phone: icons were replaced to default icons after reboot.

I highly do not recommend buying on eBay. People tend to sell defective items on eBay. They have no risk. You pay them upfront as well for one way shipping and when you have to return the defective item - you pay shipping again.

If you missed the warranty that the seller gives you (in my case 3 days) you can kiss goodbye to your money.

You wait for the mail to come. in my case was 2 weeks even thought I paid USD30 for shipping.

So now I am waiting for Rogers's phone. It will give me 30 day warranty and ability to use Samsung's 1 yr warranty.

PS: my phone shuts down randomly from standby mode. Hard reset did not help. Now I am waiting when seller receives my phone back and what he decides to do: refund or not. Or maybe he will just choose to quit on me.

Wow!  Thanks man. Appreciate your generosity and kindness for telling me that.  It's those thing that I needed to know before I venture into the Captivate.  I had almost similar experience with my Blackberry from Verizon. Got it unlocked and it kept ramdonly rebooting on me.  It must be a software thing cause once I upgraded to new OS version, the phone don't reboot on me anymore.
I heard of unbranding.  That might remove the AT&T splash screen and perhaps bloatware.

Thing is, Rogers is not releasing the Captivate until possibly mid Oct...and this is only speculation.  This sucks!
I might end up buying from www.puremobile.ca since they do have warranty.  Besides, I have to sign up for another 3yrs to get the Captivate for $150?  If I can sign up another year but pay less than an unlock phone online, that would be an option.

Well, I just got an e-mail from Rogers with the pre-order.  Preorder is of course at $150 for 3yrs.  It says existing customer can check the hardware upgrade or pricing at Rogers store when the Captivate is out mid Oct.

Keep in mind that "mid-October" is only a few weeks away, so that's not as horrifying as it sounds.  Wink Wink
