I am on my 4th Captivate!!!  The first 3 I went through back in September and October had HORRIBLE lag issues, as I'm beginning to notice, do everyone elses.  I switched to the iPhone 4 for a month, and I must admit, I enjoyed it.  But the limitations!!!  I even jail broke it and still couldn't do things I can do with Android out of the box.  I'm still an Android fan, but my wife, my family and hers are all on AT&T so it doesn't make sense to switch service providers.  Which leaves me with limited options.  I'm on Captivate #4 now, and once again, I am having lag issues.  Just by doing the most simple of tasks as, going from web browser to home page.  It's SO FRUSTRATING!
I might be willing to root my phone if I know I can restore it if somethings happens, i.e. iPhone.  I just don't want a $200 paperweight, and be stuck with my old crappy phone.  From what I hear, it could solve all my problems with lag, and give me many more perks.  I just want my phone to run like it's meant to with its processor!  I do REALLY and TRULY love my Captivate, but sometimes the lag alone makes it not worth it.

So, once again, PLEASE CONVINCE ME!!!

To paraphrase Morpheous in the Matrix,

The choice is yours, you can take the white pill and continue on as though nothing happened (using the iPhone), or you can take the green pill and open your eyes to the Android phone and it's possibilities.

I have not had much problem with lag, I am using stock 2.1.  I do notice that when memory gets below a certain point (55-60 MB free), my phone will start to lag.  There are several options to fix lag.

Lag due to memory consumption can be fixed by running Advanced Task Killer Free, you can run this on demand (which I do) or set it to run automatically at regular intervals.

Lag due to File System can be fixed by rooting your phone and running One Click Lag Fix (OCLF).  Which does work and I have tried.

Obviously, the decision is yours and no matter what I or anyone else says, you are going to have to make up your mind.  There are fixes to just about any problem, but complaining about them does not solve the issue, doing something does.

Thanks for the input, but my complaints aren't unwarranted.  I have advanced task killer, it's set to crazy and I make a concious effort of only letting the apps that I'm using run.  I know the possibilities of the phone, I also know what it's supposed to do out of the box.  And it doesn't do it.  I also have read several reviews and opinions about OCLF, and it seems like it's gone about 60/40 in favor of people who say, "don't do it."  I'm by no means tech illiterate, but at the same time I'm not a tech guru.  I've just done an extensive amount of research on the technology that this phone has and what it's supposed to do.  The sad thing is, none of us Captivate owners should have to root our phones to make them run the way they are supposed to.  Once again, thanks for the input.  I still have another 2 weeks to make up my mind.

I have had mine for about 2 months and it has been fine as far as lag. My daughter, her friend and my boss have the Captivate and they don't have lag issues. It does slow down a little when the memory got down to about 50mb to 60mb. I use advanced task manager and advanced task killer. I use the safe setting. I tried to use the aggressive and crazy setting but I seemed to have weird problems. I think something was being killed that shouldn't.

Do you think that there could be something you are doing to cause the lag or did all 4 Captivates have the lag problem right out of the box?

That would be some sucky luck to get 4 bad ones like that. I feel for you. Hang in there it's a great phone. If it get close to your 30 days take it back and get another one. I'm sure you know it's a sweet phone when it's working correctly.

Yeah the first 3 were from the same store, and all of them within a week of owning them, began to lag. I had ATK on all of them. But since I still have till mid Jan. with this one I'll try the settings on safe mode. I must admit I've been continuously putting it on crazy mode just cause I thought it would be best if nothing was running. You are right though, it is a sweet phone.  It's just that, at this point with all of the phones I've gone through, I'm just trying to justify giving the Captivate one more shot. Also with the hopes of getting an OS update.  I'm dying for Flash Player.  Thanks again to everyone for your input.

Well I dont think switching your phone 4 times would really do anything to fix the lag all that it would do is get you a shiny new phone each time. It really depends on what what you mean by lag and how much stuff you have running in the background. Yes phones do lag it doesnt matter if you have something running in the background or not its all up to the ROM that you have. I can get a custom rom installed on my phone and guess what even with Voodoo enabled and nothing running my phone still hiccups and lags and i dont know why and i have 128mb of ram available

right now as i check my phone after a fresh reboot i have 141.2mb of ram free and after refreshing it im now up to 153.4mb free and as i switched screens my phone wanted to lag. IF you want to try a program called AutoKiller. It has speed up my phone considerbly since i started using it and i also use a task killer too but that i have as a widget so i can choose when i want to kill programs myself which also saves battery since its not running in the background

just because a phone may hicup going from screen to screen doesnt mean it lags considerbly just think about it you are holding a computer in your hands which is considerbly smaller than your laptop and has a preccessor which is about the same as it too to me having a 1ghz proccesser is more than i ever wanted and i can even overclock it to 1.2ghz if i wanted to with teh capability of going to 1.6ghz (which you would need a heatsink just to keep the thing cool) but anyways...

if you dont want to root the phone or change roms then you problably are not going to get 2.2 anytime soon with this phone and you are going have to stick with what you have. 2.1 worked great for me yes it was slow but laggy umm i didnt think so it just took some effort into getting things to load. The choice is yours if you want to go to an iphone which they have locked up considerably or stick with the Captivate or any android where you can disguise the limit because right now im changing the bootloading screen, some of the icons for the phone, and the battery gauge and im loving it because i can do whatever i want!

Your lag problem is not due to hardware issues, but software issues. Samsung has stupidly decided to use its own proprietary file system that is causing over 90% of the lag you are experiencing (you're on stock, so you won't be getting lag from the nonexistent flash player). There are a couple of workarounds, though, since it is a purely software issues: 1. flash a custom Rom with lagfix enabled and see your lag disappear, or 2. use the one-click lagfix. I'd personally go with 1. You have no idea how many Android functions were disabled by AT&T, it's atrocious. You really should liberate your phone with custom software, and that will make your phone go faster, enable you to use USB tethering and wireless access points for free, instead of getting charged by AT&T, disable data mode and still be able to go online with Wifi, have backlight LED notification when you get a new notification, be able to use corporate mail without paying for the enterprise data plan, and many more features.
