I was curious as to if the amount of data usage the Captivate uses to auto update the weather(using the GPS type thing) and the Social Feeds widget uses every update?

Would it be noticable? I don't really care about battery usage, simply the data usage. My phone is not in use or is on silent about 6 hours of my day for school, so the battery life probably won't be an issue for me. The Data however....

I plan on getting the $15/month plan, and I feel it'd be enough, but a little bit of feedback from people who have actually used the phone for a while, as to if the $15 is barely any to get by.

I will have WiFi at my house, and almost every restaurant nowdays has WiFi.

My school, my car, random public places that create boredom(being bribed into going shopping with my parents with promises of yummy out of town restaurants). I would probably only check facebook, maybe play a few games(that don't require data i'm pretty sure) and such.

Facebook is my main thing I use my phone for.

Soya, $15 oughta be enough right? The calculator told me I could view my facebook a bunch with the $15, but then again, it wouldn't be the first time an official company help tool has screwed me over Embarrased

And also, I appologize if i'm annoying anyone with all of my questions!

I just feel the more I ask, the less random people will have to ask simple questions like this.

And the more posts, the better the search tool works, amirite?

Yes and yes  Big Grin

There's a contact in your list -- "AT&T View Data Usage" that will show you how much data you have used on your specific phone, by billing cycle.  That way you can watch your usage and try to curb it if it looks like you're getting too close to going over.

Always always always remember when you are out in town (away from your own wifi) to search for a wifi signal.  You would be amazed at just how many places have it, whether they advertise it or not.  I was sitting in a doctor's office and got one.  Hospitals have them.  Hotels have them (altho some you have to input a room number in order to connect). Restaurants, pretty much everywhere. Heck, even my condo has it!  You may even find it in some stores and malls!  There's a good chance you can get on wifi at school (unless they have it blocked).

Watch your game/app usage -- if it's a freebie, there's a HUGE chance an ad is running (even in the background) and is using data.

thanks for the heads up on the WiFi Kiss

However i'm positive my school doesn't have WiFi. All the computers are trashy slow, running basic windows XP (the version that looks like windows 98 because the computers can't run the normal XP look). Half of them have the disc drives tore of by trashy kids. And yeah, if we get caught with cellphones, we get them taken away for a week by the schoool, so i highly doubt they'd set up WiFi Embarrased

And the Game and App thing is crapppppy D:
I really don't think i'm planning on paying for many applications, aside from UI changes and Widgets. Is there any way to turn off the data usage?

I have seen several apps that allow you to toggle your data usage.  Search appbrain.com and you'll see - there are also numerous data counter apps/widgets.  I did a search for "turn off data" and found a slew of nifty utilities.

I was also concerned about the data usage.  So far, it hasn't been an issue.  I installed Data Counter widget which shows I've used 800mb on wifi and 168mb on cell.  It allows you to set your start date for the billing period and gives you a tally for day/week/month/install (month is your billing cycle month).  I've used a lot of maps which drives up the data usage.  I'm just about approaching 1 month of usage (4 more days).  I'm on the 2gb plan but hope to switch to 200mb.

Are you talking about turning off data usage on the apps?  Only if you know how to mod them & take the ad code out -- which would be cruel to the poor starving devs who created the app in the first place.

The data counter widget mentioned above sounds like it could be a good tool for you to use.  Just remember to keep an eye out on it, and knowing your billing cycle will go a long way too.

Edit:  Also keep in mind:  if you get close to going over, you can upgrade the data plan to the 2GB, effective that day.  Then drop it back down on next cycle.  You can toggle back and forth between the two data plans as needed to cover your booty on overage.

Thanks! The widget does sound like the perfect thing! I know I don't really use a ton of data on average with my Eternity, however I'm still unsure of how much 200mb really is. I doubt I will know that until I have my hands on the Captivate. I usually tend to stop using my phone as much after a while, haha(i.e  I will begin using that daily briefing app, and eventually forget about it, and stop using it). I will however always check my facebook and the weather.

Another, off topic question on the Captivate that just popped into my head is, is it easy to add pictures to contacts?

I know you can import facebook contacts, however that doesn't seem like a good thing for me(I have a ton of people added that I simply know from school, and don't care about). I was wondering if I could simply link facebook pages to pre-existing contacts already in my phone.

Example:

Bob Miller is saved on my SIM card, I insert my SIM card into the Captivate.
I copy all of my contacts off of the SIM card, and add them to the phone's internal memory. I edit the contacts list to only show contacts saved on the phone memory, hiding the SIM contacts. I would then go to a facebook profile, get the address, copy it, and paste it into some sort of blank? Will it update the picture, and everything of that nature?

Or is it only possible to sync the facebook and have it add all friends?

kthnx:)

Okay, I used the same memory card I had in my Eternity, and kept the same folder setup (which works very nicely).  So when I set up my Captivate contacts (did them manually because I wanted to weed some out and at the same time get practice on the keyboard), I had pics on my SD card that I just popped right into the contact.  That part is super easy.

I haven't imported FB contacts, because I don't want 400+ people in my phone!  Shocked

The FB mobile interface sucks IMHO and if you can get it to do anything else other than showing you posts that are 7 days old and repeating them, congrats.  Anytime I try to even just read my news feed I have to go to the bottom and hit "full site" so it'll have a chance of actually working for me.

Get the ATT my mobility app too. It will track your data usage, minutes, texts sent, etc and tell you how far away you are from reaching all your limits. It is the number one app on my homescreen!

Yes, the application is free, I actually stumbled upon it before reading this (:

I have a data usage widget which tracks how much I use and such, and i've been killing apps like crazy, every few minutes, and it's worked great so far

But yeah, the ATT app is free, it's in the marketplace under ATT as "AT&T myWirelsss"

It's quite nice (:

(though i can't check data usage until next month due to changes in the plan(changing from $10 unlimited data on eternity, to smartphone data on Captivate))

You can still check that through the AT&T View My Data Usage contact -- it will look weird because it will show your usage on both plans.  Here's my example of what the text will look like (Although this isn't the switch from the old plan to current, just the change from 2GB to 200MB):

Next Bill Cycle:9/23/10
Data (MB): 1.1 of 2048
(deactivated)
Data (MB): 63.3 of 200
Messaging: 2024 of Unlimited
