So I have searched the forums, and my problem seems to be very specific.

I tend to use 700-800 MB a month (at least following the past 2.5 years) and nothing has changed. This morning I woke up to a text message that I had reached my limit. But wait, my cycle started on the 2nd and I have the 2GB plan. Something is up.

I check online and I'm at 4806/2048 MB. Holy ****! I call up Customer Service and they go over with me that Monday, this past Monday, at 12am I used 2.5 GB in a transfer. Then the same day around 2pm, I used another 1.5GB.

He had me go to the Data Usage Calculator on the site and we slid up all the sliders, and that would put max at 28GB/mo. Well, if I follow this chunk random usage, I will be at a minimum of 25GB this month.

I have wifi at home and at work. This weekend, I only used my phone for email and texting--so it wasn't catchup from the weekend.  And the entire day I was at work with my phone charging (lol).

WTF? Is there any way to figure out in my phone what was going on that it sent that much info? A log file somewhere of what my phone was doing?

I came from an Eternity as many of you have.

Can anyone lend me a hand?
Thank you for your time!

Ouch!

Well do you know if you just installed an app? Something similar happened to another user here and it turned out to be the yahoo mail for android app was buggy for them and eating up data. Usually apps are the culprits for things like this.

I would suggest asking ATT to put a hold on your 3g usage until you can figure this out.

It's odd that you have wifi and it's still doing it.

Actually, the only new app that I had put on was the Yahoo Mail app, but I didn't think that was it. I think I'll get rid of it just in case.

The guy on customer service put a 'free unlimited' month on for me so I can figure out the problem and get it taken care of. So I have no overage charges for the month, but I'm keeping a darn good log of everything that does anything!

Thank you for the info. But do you know if there is a log that I could check what apps were sending things out?

I'm sorry. I don't know of any logs that you can check. I'm fairly new to android and don't know a lot of the technical stuff.

Hopefully it's just the yahoo app. Easy fix if it is! Good luck Happy

To fix this problem, go to Settings>Accounts and sync.  If Background data and Auto-sync are checked, then that's your problem.  When using 3g, apps such as email, Facebook, and Twitter are constantly checking for new messages which tend to eat up data.  Some games have ads that will use data in the background if they aren't killed when done playing.

The #1 app for any Android user should be Quick Settings.  It allows you to turn off your data usage with the touch of a button.

I used this app to disabled my data usage and now I operate solely by wifi.  I don't pay any data usage fees.

I dont see how the auto sync could use that much data.  I have mine on and I use mostly WiFi and I've only used 114 MB so far this month.  Its got to be something else unless you have TONZ of apps that are always checking for updates.

As you've stated, you're using most wifi.  It also depends on your sync settings; whether your email checks for new messages every 5, 10, 30 min, 1 hr, etc.

True.  But from reading the original post it seems they use mostly wifi also.  Seems to be more along the lines of a glitchy app but I guess they could be running TONZ of apps as well that constantly check...

Under Menu>Settings>Wireless and network>Wi-fi settings>Menu button>Advanced button check under the wi-fi sleep policy.  I have mine set to never, that way it won't automatically switch back to 3G.
