I've downloaded some ringtones on my Samsung Captivate and I can only get them to play in the music player.  How do I make them ringtones?

The easiest way (without using an app) is to put your sound files on a removable microSD card.
Create a directory on the card for:
Media/Audio/Ringtones
and place the files there.  Next go to Setting:Sound and Display:Voice Call Ringtone and the file should show up along with the pre-loaded sound files.

The same procedure works for Alarms and Notifications by creating additional directories under "Audio"

Greetings,  I have a similar question.  I have some mp3s on my desktop (DT) I'd like to use as ringtones.  I attached the USB cable from the phone to my DT and can see the directory structure of the phone.  I'm thinking I should be able to simply transfer the files over somewhere and use them.  Underneath SGH-I897 / Phone / Android / I see data and DCIM.  From there, where can I put my mp3s so that I can selet them as ringtones?  I can't find where the phone is accessing the current list of ringtones.  Many thanks, Maja

the samsung Captivate, like most phones, will only use mp3s that are 300kb or less as ringtones.

Mine works fine regardless of file size, but ringtones over 300k will show up in the music player.

Create the media directory in the same location as the DCIM directory if you do not have an external microSD card installed.

[ Or if you open up the phone's internal memory with a file manager app it will go under /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones.  There are a lot of directories not shown in Windows. ]

Because I transferred my SD card over from my Eternity to my Captivate, the folder setup worked beautifully in the Captivate.

For alarm tones:  when you set the alarm up, select "alarm tone" then "go to my files".  It should show your folder structure then you can just navigate to where you have them saved.

Hope this helps!

Try to do this guys.

download the "rings extended" at the market and thats for free.

if you go to application >> settings >> sound and display >> voice call ringtone >> rings extended and you can see the music or sounds on your card or music player .

How did you try to set it?

Did you do this? This will set your default ringtone

Menu>Settings>Sound and display>Voice call ringtone

Then select Android System
Then a list of your ringtones to select from should come up.
Select the ringtone you want and tap OK

Also make sure the ringtone file size is 300kb or less.
