Hello and welcome to the forums.

Please read this thread for discussion about your issue:
http://www.samsungCaptivateforum.com/samsung-Captivate-how-to/usb-connection-failure-to-pc/

This is the fix that worked for me:

Make sure the drivers are downloaded and installed.

Plug your USB cord into the computer

On your phone, set the USB Settings to "ask on connection"

Plug your phone into the USB cord and choose "Media Player"

Open Windows Explorer and look for the phone icon to indicate connection.  If you have an SD card installed you will see two drives listed under the phone icon -- internal SD & external SD

***You may have to do this a few times for it to finally recognize the phone***

You can set up a folder on the SD card called "music" or "tones" and just drag/drop to copy them from the comp to the phone.

Sorry i followed all you instructions and the computer still doesn't recognize the phone, maybe im installing the drivers wrong, when i install them there is a button called setup so i click on that then i press install and it installs. Is that how you install the drivers?

Glad to hear you got it.

Sometimes you can have the phone on and unconnected, and it'll recognize it when you connect.  Sometimes recycling the power will help. Sometimes it'll work having the phone off but plugged via USB then turn the phone on.

Please help!  I've been trying to sideload a song to my Captivate all day, and have not had any success.  For a while, when I assigned the media player identity to my USB, my PC "recognized" the phone as a camera!

So, I came here, read this post, downloaded the drivers, and now, one time, the PC reconized two drives, as you stated above, MK.  And it said, "please insert a disk" into each of them.  GRRRRRR!!!

So, I unplugged, and tried again, and it's back to recognizing my phone as a camera.
Any other ideas?  Or do I just keep plugging and unplugging?  Oy.

thanks.

when you connect it to the computer select mass storage device then when the scroll down menu pops up select mount. If the computer doesn't recognize it still turn off the phone and turn it back on, thats how it worked for me. Try a couples times it should recognize it. Good Luck

Thanks for the idea, but I'm still getting the "insert a disk" message.  RRRR.

Thanks, though.

I always got the "insert disk" message when using mass storage mode...that's why I used the media player mode.  Now, every time I connect my phone via USB I *still* have to plug/unplug/recycle power/etc etc multiple times to make it finally see the connection.  When it does (I'm on Vista), you'll see a phone icon in Windows Explorer as a recognized device, then you'll see the 2 separate drives treed underneath the device.

Really, it's a big gigantic pain in the arse.  If you want to bypass USB altogether at this point, interface your "external" SD Card with your computer, put everything you need on it, and use it to transfer whatever you need to onto the phone (if it's something you want moved to the phone and off your removable card.

* applications
* my files
* sd
* (whatever folder name on your external card)
*find the file you want moved, long press the file, menu will pop up
* choose move
* you should be in the root /sdcard/ menu (which is the phone)
* move it wherever you want it to

Yeah, this is the long way around and you have to do it file by file, but it is a way to bypass the USB issues.  If you fight with your comp/phone interface and can't get that to work, at least you could spend the same amount of time just getting stuff moved.

---> Side note:  I haven't been home for a week with sick family so I haven't been able to tackle a better solution for the USB interfacing...

I'm having the same problem.  I have downloaded all drivers that I think I can download.  I have also downloaded Kies and Kies mini trying to sync my music from my pc (using Vista) to my Captivate.  Finally, drivers are there and Kies is there, but when I connect my phone to my pc i get this error:  Unsupported device alert.  This device is not supported by Kies 2.0. Make sure that your device is supported and try again.  Any help?  PLEASE?? Thanks in advance.
