I bought my captivate earlier this year. it just keeps getting slower. i have restored to factory settings a few times and it gets faster for a while, but then slows down, presumably from adding apps. i have talked to samsung a few times and they just tell me to delete all my apps. problem with that is if i didnt want apps i wouldnt have bought a damn smart phone! i did just recently add adw launcher because i like how customizable it is, but im willing to delete if that is the problem. i do have a few apps that i did pay for that i dont want to buy again, so i would like to back up to pc before i try anything. only problem is that titanium seems like the program to do it but need to root first. that being said, i am out of warranty. i am not familiar with programming, but i can follow directions. it is build 1012. somebody please help me, i keep borrowing the atrix i bought my gf cuz its way faster and she thinks its hilarious. also, my gps keeps throwing me off track too, had to borrow her phone to get to a concert last week and still listening to it!

I would recommend a pc program called superoneclick to root your phone. It's really easy to use. Then a program from the market called tegrak overclock. Tegrak works with stock froyo, and you can speed up the cpu.

Titanium backup is also an absolute necessity.

thanks for the info ironjoey, just one other thing. Isnt it better to back up my phone before rooting it? i dont mind buying titanium, but i dont think it works until the phone is rooted. I really dont want to have to buy two seperate back up apps (one for before i root and one after) seems like there has to be a better way to keep my apps safe. or should i just go ahead and root, then backup with titanium? would that be safe?

Most backup apps require root, so root then use titanium.

well i got my phone rooted! i hope... i took your advice and used superoneclick (it should be noted that downloads direct from superoneclick are down temporarily, but is available from xda , though registering is necessary for links to be active) i watched the video josh does for mobiletechvideos and it went smooth. the only difference fro the video is that it stopped me in the middle of downloasd and prompted me to install busybox. superuser app now available. then i downoaded the pro titanium app, but it does not show up in my apps and when pulled up in market it only gives refund option, no option to open. also, when i click the allow non-market apps tab in superoneclick it gets to the 11th line of code and freezes up. last line is...  checkinng for shell root...   check if shell rooted   0.13s   false. this prompted me to restart superoneclick and click the shell root tab. i then rebooted phone and tried allowing non market apps again. still freezes superoneclick and still cannot find titanium backup  u have been very helpful ironjoey, i know there has got to be some sort of protocol in these forums, rating ppl that help u or something, so please tell me if im screwin this all up. i really appreciate your help.

so before i did anything including root i got a quadrant score of 790. rooted phone got similar score.downloaded tegrak overclock and didnt change (tho i didnt manually change anything because its a lil over my head. i backed up phone to pc then restored to factory settings. unrooted then rerooted. scored 782. wanted to load tegrak kernel but when i open it it says "failed toconnect tegrak service. please install tegrak kernel first." tried to load using sgs kernel flasher but cannot find tegrak kernel in directory under "choose kernel" am i going about this all the wrong way? phone is faster since i deleted everything but i intend to reload and want my quadrant score to get up there. right? plz push me in right direction

Tegrak works pretty well work the stock rom. Open tegrak and click load module. Then click the other option for set cpu max frequency. I would recommend anything less than the 1.3ghz. That to one seems to lock mine up. Been getting apparent scores of around 1300

so i have been on this computer trying to soak up all of this info. i have learned enough to know i dont know much. i finally flashed my fist rom! fasty 2.5. qouadrant score now at 1522! im gettin there. loaded from sd card in recovery mode. wanted to use odin but when i click the pda button i cannot open zip files and once unzipped the folders appear empty. do u know why? i gotta be doin something wrong. i would like to learn more because once i try out a few froyo roms. i wanna get into gingerbread, but then i gotta get familiar with bootloaders. Though i guess i could move those on sd card as well, just trying to be well rounded. i already have the captivate .pit file thanks again for all your help,u got me in the 1500s! now i just gotta get it higher than my girlfriend's atrix score of 1800. also, should my phone still seem slow, do i have that much work left to do? i didnt even restore backups yet, phone is naked
