Let's try and make a dedicated  thread to see if we can't figure this thing out through trial and error and narrowing down why the phone does this. Maybe it's not random after all.

Ill be the first to say that mine does it every twenty minutes, only when idle and my phone is not rooted. I have had the phone for about 6 weeks.

Because of this phone I will NEVER consider the purchase of another Samsung product besides maybe a lamp. My previous phone was a Samsung impression (check out Samsung-impression.org) and I and many others had a text bug that att refused to acknowledge, and Samsung said "we are aware of the issue and working on a solution".  Well the phone is obsolete now and guess what? no solution.  I and many other wen through four or five impressions before att gave me a Captivate. Most never got one, I did, but I had to go through the BBB for it.
If froyo does not fix this issue I don't think it ever will be fixed and those of use no longer under warranty will be playing roulette if we use our insurance to get a replacement.  They make these phones that are amazing in their specs so u buy them (the impression is still the most capable non-smartphone) but they have a terrible bug that doesn't appear immediately, and they never fix it.

Same problem here.  On my SECOND Captivate and this one shuts down more frequently then the last one.  I will monitor it to see how frequently it is doing it.  I was not checking on a regular basis but will do so now.  I want ATT to acknowledge and fix this problem or let me go back to my iPhone which I KNOW works!

guess i have been the lucky one with both my impression and Captivate. I was one of the mods over at the impression forum and saw a lot of complaints about the text bug but i had never experianced it, also have not yet experienced a random shutdown of the phone

I downloaded Captivate Keep Alive as well. It's been 24 hours and the phone hasn't shut off once.  It is still making me angry that a thrid party had to develop this app.  I am awaiting my 3rd Captivate delivery today by 3.  I am going to try a new one again and if it has the shutdown issue I DO NOT WANT TO KEEP IT EVEN WITH THE NEW APP.  I feel that I should be able to have the phone replaced with one that doesn't require an app to stay turned on!

Captivate number 3 seems to be OK.  It's been on for 18 hours now without a shut down.  This doesn't mean a whole lot since Captivate #1 took a month to start shutting off all the time.  I am going to hope for the best.  I'm going to start the task of re-loading email accounts, apps, and music.  If the shut down starts to happen I'll be back on the phone with ATT faster then the phone can shut down a second time.  Very sad that 2 of three phones have this issue!  Thanks to all for the posts!

Ok. I'm old and technologically challenged, these things I admit. My phone has started the random shutdown thing, which is annoying when you need the alarm to wake you up for silly things like getting your kids to school on time.
I searched several sites & discovered there are several states with class action law suits over this problem. AT&T offered to send me a refirb. but I figure it will just do the same thing.

I downloaded the keep alive app & find the instructions to be vague & useless. Could someone here help me figure this out?

I'm stuck at home with a broken foot. I cut the cast off with a hack saw, claw hammer & a screwdriver.....or was it a margarita...I really don't remember. I had demerol & alcohol both on board, so that's a tad fuzzy. (Do not try this at home, I'm a nurse, married to a doctor....we're professionals here).

thanks guys.

Getting a refurbed phone is a crapshoot, it's true.  But it does get you one replacement closer to making a claim with ATT for a brand new phone of comparable cost!  There's a lot of techy stuff you can try, but it sounds like you don't want to go there.  Out of curiosity, do you have a stock (Eclair version) phone or have you updated to the newer 2.2 (Froyo)?

Menu (bottom left corner of phone) > Settings > About Phone  --  Firmware Version... 2.1 (Eclair) or 2.2 (Froyo)?

This phone is a piece of crap. This is my second one from ATT and it was fine for abut 3 months now it has started the same crap of shutting itself down just like the other one.
