Every time I unlock the screen on my phone, the 3G indicator says the phone is uploading or downloading. Any ideas? Thanks.

Has your data usage actually gone up? I have a program called 3G Watchdog installed that measures my 3g use and will even notify me when i reach a certain limit of use. Also try to use a task killer to kill any unnecessary apps that are running in the background bc you may had installed something that is running and using data

My phone does that too every time I wake it up. May take 2-3 seconds for it to revert back to the wifi icon from the 3G icon. Yes it looks like it's transferring, but it's only mere bytes and should not be anything of significance.

You will most likely only see it when your phone has been in sleep mode for at least 10 minutes or so and more. If it's only been 2 minutes (after you woke it up the first time showing the 3g icon), it won't show it again.
Here's a simple test: Go to your AT&T "view my data usage" in contacts list Let the phone sleep for about 30 minutes after you get the data usage text back from AT&T Wake your phone up (you should see the 3g icon) go back to "view my data usage" and see how much it changed in that amount of time

SMODA app will also turn it off. There is a number of things you can do. May I refer you to the thread "APN (3G) turn off". toward the end me and another guy have been talking of these different ways. If you have Tasker installed you can use that to turn 3G off.

My son just got a Samsung Captivate from ATT last month. His data usage has gone from 11,000 KB to 1.5 GB over the last month. As I review the bill, there are many downloads/updates from "wap.cingular". I called ATT and they said it appears that they are updates to the phone. Some of these updates are occurring at 1 or 2AM. This did not happen inthe first month he had the phone, only this past month. Is this normal? I am glad that he is on the 2GB plan. Thought about putting him on the 200MB plan, but glad I did not. Is there a way to keep this from happening? Does the phone really require this many updates?

No, there has been only one phone update so far. I think what is being updated are his apps, although mine just notifies me of when they are ready for an update, and I can choose when that actually happens. I always update and download apps when I am in a Wifi hotspot. The other thing to look at are his apps. A lot of different apps out there will connect to the internet in the background. It is easy to see when this is happening because your 3G symbol's arrows will be flashing red and green. I suggest that if he starts to get close to his 2GB threshold that you do something above in the post to manage the phones ability to connect. I also recomend using Tasker app (if you have it) to only allow the phone to sync while in a wifi hotspot. I noticed my data usage drop after I set it up to only sync while in wifi. Of course if he isn't in a wifi zone for most of his day that would be inconvenient. Anyways good luck.

I will have him look for the Tasker app you mentioned and if he does not have it he probably should get it. The biggest updates are in the middle of the night which should load through the home wi-fi. Some of the "updates" are 170,000 KB's. Had over 650,000 KB's of "updates" in a 48hr period. Thanks for the help.

Something sounds fishy to me. I don't think he should be getting those updates. Tasker is a pay for app. I think it is $6.35 or something, but its uses are endless. It is worth every penny to me.

I am beginning to think the same thing. My daughter has the same phone and is only using 34MB in a month vs my son using 1.5GB +. I will try ATT one more time or go to the store where we bought it to get some direction. Hopefully there is not some app that he should not have on there. I will post what I find out.

It might not be updates for the phone itself but updates for apps that he has installed on the phone. A lot of apps auto-update themselves (though this feature can generally be turned off).

Has anyone tried turning the background data mode off so no apps can perform downloads or updates until you activate that app?
I always have my backround data unchecked and then when I go to market it tells me I have to turn backround data on first to access the market and if Im on the market long enough it will start syncing and updating and will notify me of apps that I have downloaded that have updates available. When done on market I shut the backround data off.
Go to settings -> accounts and sync -> backround data
