The problem you are describing seems to be with the address book sync.

You may be the victim of AT&T built-in bloatware apps. The "AT&T Address Book" app automatically runs in the background to sync your contacts with the AT&T Address Book server.

To disable automatic sync go to: Contacts > Menu > More > Settings > AT&T Address Book > Turn "Auto Sync contact with online Address Book" off.. that should fix your problem.

Has your data usage actually gone up? I have a program called 3G Watchdog installed that measures my 3g use and will even notify me when i reach a certain limit of use. Also try to use a task killer to kill any unnecessary apps that are running in the background bc you may had installed something that is running and using data

I have that app, and I use ATK.  Is there a way to dissable 3g?  Seems like it's not doing it now... HUH?

dc switch will allow you to turn your 3g on and off

Probably sound like an idiot, but what/where is the dc switch?? Any help appreciated. Having same problem as other lady. Phone is eating data like crazy and I can't figure out why and what's using it. Have used more data in the last 4 days than I usually do in a month!!
All was fine until I downloaded the FB app and it made me sync my gmail account with it. After that it started using data like crazy! I uninstalled the FB app but it's still going thru data fast.

The easiest fix is to download Quick Settings.  I'll swear by this app.  One click of a button and data usage via 3G is disabled.  Press it again and 3G is back on.  It's that simply.

My #1 app for any Android user without an unlimited data plan.  I don't even have a data plan, I solely use wifi and haven't been charged any data fees since I been using this app.

OK stupid noob question. If you use Quick Settings and turn-off 3G and only use wifi, do you still get calls if you are not in a wifi zone?

That's not a stupid question, but no, turning off the 3G in Quick Settings only disables the phone from connecting to the data network not the cellular network.  I don't have a data plan on my Captivate so I use Quick Settings to prevent any accidental data usage.  Works like a charm and I don't have any problems making calls or sending text messages.

Thanks, sounds like a good practice to me.
