My birthday is coming up and my sister has been pressuring me into getting a new phone (so she may have my 3GS) and I am choosing between a iPhone 4 or a Samsung Captivate. I'm greatly leaning towards a Captivate, but what should I know about upgrading? I'm coming from an unlimited data plan, shared minutes, unlimited texting iPhone 3GS and I am a complete newbie to anything phone-plan related. What plan do I have? Where should I get my Captivate for that plan for the cheapest? Good apps? Is there IRC on the Captivate? Will I be able to keep my unlimited data without being pushed into a lesser 2 gigs or 200mb? Can i use upgrade to a leaked 2.2 and then Unleash the Beast? the 3GS was my first phone

I've done plenty of reading on this phone, and it looks excellent, but I need to know these things before October 22nd (upgrade time)

Thanks to you if you can answer any of my long list Happy

Welcome to the forum.

So the phone is awesome or we wouldn't be around supporting as much as we do here in the forum. Alright let's get down to the questions:

In terms of plans, it sounds like you are coming from a "family" style plan since you mentioned shared minutes.  Is this correct?  If upgrading there may be some sticking points depending on what line is the primary line and such.  You will need to consult ATT regarding your upgrade options if your line is not the primary; if you are the primary it should be no problem to keep the same plan as you have when upgrading - including your unlimited data plan.  You should be grandfathered in under the old plan and not be forced to downgrade to the 200mb/2gb limits.  If the sales assoc tries to do so, tell'em you'll take your business elsewhere if that's the case and they should back down.  It's not like you're upgrading from a standard phone to a smartphone.

As for getting the best deal for the phone, people have been throwing out different prices for it with the top three being amazon.com, letstalk.com, and wirefly.com.  Each is a little different and you'll just have to read the fine print to find out what will work best for you. BUT make sure you read the fine print!!!

Can't comment on the IRC, I'm sure someone else will chime in on that soon.

As for the apps, yes the android market is smaller than the app store for the iphone but it's growing by leaps and bounds daily because android is open-source and developers are chomping at the bit to put out quality apps and corner you're business.  Yes, you might pay more for pay apps in the market, but for every pay one you'll find 3 more free ones that function just as well (if not better sometimes).

Froyo (unofficial official release) is out there now (there's a couple of threads here about it already) and you can upgrade as soon as you feel comfortable working with android.

If you've jailbroken the iphone and are acomfortable working down in the dirt with your phone you'll find the Captivate to fully envelope your every desire and you'll never look back.  If you are someone who doesn't want to think about what you're phone CAN do, just that it DOES what the programmers originally wanted it to do you'll be better off with the iphone, IMHO.

Drawbacks - no flash for camera, no forward facing camera...umm, that's all i can think of...

Welcome to the forum!

Kitty here has pretty much said it all but ill enlighten some of her few points

From what my experience has been you have already been grandfathered in with the unlimited data package with most of us here are not so lucky so we are stuck paying $25 for a measly 2gb a month. What ever you do do not let the salesman change your package!!! If he suggests it tell him no that you should be grandfathered in and if he changes it call att and demand them(nicely of coarse customer support people are people too and they like being treated nicely)

Best deals well, you can search a lot of places but amazon will probably be the easiest one to do because even though i have never bought a phone from these places but i have heard that letstalk and wirefly can be tricky with their deals and offerings

The IRC thing from what i can remember off the top of my head and correct me if im wrong is Infared Control which means you can control items like your tv and dvd player and as far as i know ( and i have looked) no our phone doesnt have one and doesnt support one bc yes i would love to be able to control my tv with my phone but it just aint possible and i really wish that att would come out with a remote for the uverse at least COMON ITS COMING IN OVER THE INTERNET ALREADY!!!

Apps kitty pretty much explained it all but you can get free ones which can either be a bomb or be better than the paid ones but if we dont help pay for apps then our app market will never grow larger than the apple one and also we dont at least right now have a clutter full of useless apps

One drawback that the iphone still doesnt have like us is the flash but to me its really not that important because i didnt buy the phone for the camera

I came from an iPhone 3g two weeks ago.  Both my brother and my gf have the iPhone 4, and until 3 weeks ago I thought I would be getting the iPhone 4 as well.
I am and have been on a family plan with 2 other people (but now 1 as of a month or so ago) and we still had our unlimited data.  But my brother and I downgraded to the $15 package.  So be sure to keep yours if you want to!

I'm not too familiar with rooting/upgrading as I am still stock pretty much.  But after official Froyo I plan on rooting.

A lot of your concerns are about your plan and data, yes? That shouldn't really be changed especially on a family plan.

And the front facing camera...my gf has only used it when my brother wanted to show it off to some friends, they both say that although it is a BIG feature (for advertising the phone) they barely use it.

Hope that helps you in your final decision (even though that was pretty much one sided..but look where you are Wink Wink )

The front face camera is going to be coming into style when more apps come out for it like for cisco for the buisness people who need to make video conference calls because they are stuck in a car or they arnt at the office also for the regular skype may also come or has come out with a software for it so that people with that type of camera can use their phone instead of having to sit at the computer

i saw somewhere that i think the vibrant has a spot for the front face camera on their phone but for some reason samsung didnt include the camera so someone opened up the phone and installed a camera right there risky but now they just need software to get it to work lol i dont get why someone doesnt come out with a camera that we can connect to the top usb port on our phone that can be small and can swivel so it can face front or back

Yeah I would use a camera if you could Skype with it (which eventually will happen).

I agree with the attachable camera part!
My first phone didn't have a camera on it but came with one (as bad as it was) that connected to the bottom.

Hi all,

I'm new here and also have questions about going from iphone 3gs to Captivate. The main things is the  Music and Video music transfer from itune.
All music and video music from itune are legal. Here is the questions.

Do i need some kind software to transfer itune music to Captivate format? if yes, any suggestion of program/software?

my usage of the phone:

50% music/video music
20% phone call
20% text
10% other.

Thanks,
