I am trying to find a more recent/updated thread on this topic but can't.

The deal is:

I have a Captivate and I love it. My husband BADLY needs a new phone, and I am trying to talk him into getting one like mine, but all his buddies have iphones.

His main interest is voice dialing. He spends all day on his phone and wants to be able to say: CALL LARRY like he has seen his friends do on their phone. They are all telling him that the iPhone has THE BEST voice recognition out there.

I want him to get the Captivate because of the better screen (and I know how to unlock it already and won't have to pay the $50 to Telus to unlock the iphone) PLUS it is cheaper.

What can anyone tell me about the difference?  All I can find on the internet is that I have to update the software and install some kind of application, he just wants to be able to do it without any if that fuss.

Put it this way: his current phone is over 2 years old (flip phone motorola) with a cracked screen. He just returned a brand new phone the other day because it did not have voice dial and he could not figure out out to add speed dial numbers, even though we spent an hour on the internet to learn how.

I don't think he needs an iphone or even an android, but he is all about being able to make phone calls easily and quickly and will NOT use a bluetooth (not allowed at work: safety issue)

Well, problem solved!

My Captivate (Rogers Canada) has a free Samsung app called Vlingo, which does everything I need and then some.  (did I mention FREE!)

I would just rather see husband with a Samsung Captivate than an iPhone, we have enough iSwag going around here we don't need another.

One touch, tell vlingo what you want to do and who you want to do it with (LOL) and you can text or call someone or use it to hands free navigate with the GPS or search google/listen to music or whatever and it also works with your bluetooth device.

i am told it is only available in Canada for now but it is something to look forward to soon I hope for the US!

Vlingo does not work with Bluetooth on the at&t Captivate.  Now, I suppose there is a possibility that the Canadian product is different.

Ok!  I have spent several hours dealing with this issue with both Samsung and at&t over the last few days. I have updated to Froyo (Android 2.2) which didn't fix this problem even though, I am sure, you, as I, have been told that it will/would.  The bottom line is that there is no native voice dialing capability in the Samsung Captivate.  I finally got Samsung to admit it last night. They also will not recommend a Bluetooth headset with the understanding that it will work with some 3rd party voice dialing.  The only solution they offered was to find some application to do voice dialing and install it on the phone.

Does anyone know if any of the Custom ROMs have the voice dialing built in?

Long story short, after much complaining to support at at&t and Sansung I finally got them to adnmit that voice dialing is just not in the cards for these phones.  I complained to the President of at&t Mobility, Ralph de la Vega, and he told me to go pick out two new phones (I had two Captivates) of equivelent value, in other words, not iPhones which I didn't want anything to do with anyhow, and he would swap.  I got to HTC Inspire 4G phones and I love them.

I wrote to Ralph de la Vega, and the letter got sent back to me weeks later.  Is there any way possible of reaching this guy so something can be done?
