Mk EDIT:  This was a great response in a separate post --- wanted to share this fix with all in an easily discoverable spot!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

First off, I don't see that anyone has addressed the volume issue.  I will agree that is an issue for some but not all.  Just follow these instructions and it will increase your volume.

Before I go further, I am not a technician and I take no responsibility for any problems you have on your phone.  I have done everything I say on my Captivate with no issues but I cannot guarantee you the same results.

Volume fix:
This fix comes from XDA developers link is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741012

Worked like a charm.  My preset settings were slightly higher.  I only moved each preset up a few spots and I'll give it a day to see the differences.  I changed the volume of the ;
    Headset
    Handset
    Speaker

One of the options was listed as "Diamond Solution".  Any idea what that is?  I was afraid to touch it.

It would be great to get a document that described each of these menu items.

Thanks again.   Big Grin

I just bought my Captivate new from at&t less than a week ago and the speaker quits working whenever it feels like it. I have to tap it on a table to make it work again. I think im going back to an iPhone. Never had any problems there!

You got a lemon. It happens, somewhere in the thousands of phones being produced by the hour, one or two will get screwed up. Don't blame the phone simply because you were cursed with a lemon. Go take it to ATT and switch it for another Captivate, free of charge(probably)

If you really want an iPhone, go there, but that's like a downgrade for everything but useless apps.

The app drawer on the Captivate looks like an iPhone. It has widgets and homescreens, live wallpapers. My speaker works quite well, aside from I wish it'd play from both front and back so i could hear it better.

What i'm saying is, don't just say THIS SUCKS, iPHONE TIME, simply because you were unlucky and received a faulty speaker. Replace it, try the phone for a week or two, if you still prefer your iPhone, get it. It just bothers me that you are so quick to deem this phone not as good as the iPhone, simply because of your unlucky situation. Embarrased

Retard is absolutely correct with that statement

also please be careful chaning your volume settings even though it is nice to be able to have a louder speaker on the phone it does give it more of a chance for the speaker to rip

Proceed at your own risk!

Is this fix also to help with the ascending ringtone problem as well?

If not does anyone know a good app to help with the ascending ringtone issue?

If you're patient enough to rip your own ringtones, you can insert maybe 5(?) seconds or so of silence in the beginning to offset the ascent time. Then when the ringtone actually makes sound it should be at full volume.

I'm the noob, remember me?  I did find the good ringtone notifier though!

My problem is the volume in call.  It's loud as it will go, but I am having trouble hearing.  Special needs son making a racket doesn't help but even in quiet I am straining a bit sometimes (no hearing problems)

Is one of the settings above for in-call holding the phone to your ear as well?

Also the highest setting of the ringer when it's "ringtone songs" is terribly low.  Is there a specific setting above for that as well or is that considered "speakers" and is the exact remedy above?

Thanks for being explicit in the directions above!

I agree, the call volume is quite low, compared to other phones. A trick I used to do on my eternity when calling Xbox Support and ATT and such, which are, naturally just soft sounded people, I'd stick my eternity into speakerphone, and then turn the volume down as low as it'd go. That way, it's loud, but not too loud. Although you may blast the other person's ear(i'm unsure if that's true, but :p eh ohwell)

Hi.  I have a problem with the in call volume.  I'ts a little diffrent than what I've read here. When I'm placing a call in my car, I usually use the headphone jack (3.5) so I font have to be holding my phone. Recently Ithe volume on it  just dropped and the volume settiny is all the way up. When a call comes in the volumedrops  and you can only hear it through the handset. Now I use the music player all the time and its working fine. So I know the jack is working like it should. This only happens when a call is made or recived. I went through all the settings and nothing worked. Can you please help?

I have had this issue a little in the past with my bluetooth earpiece.  I have everything set to high and when I connect to a call the volume is lower then it should be.  One thing I have noticed is that it automatically lowers the volume.  So if I press the volume rocker on the side of the phone up I see that the volume is not all the way up.  I raise it and it goes back up.  I doubt this is your issue but it seems to either be a bug or just the programming for touchwiz.  If you have not tried this idea yet, try it and see if that is the deal.  Took me a while to figure it out myself.  I didn't think such an easy fix would be just that..  an easy fix.

Hope that might help...  Anyone else have any ideas?

Changing these settings did not survive power off and restart.  The settings went back to default.  Anyone had this issue?  Did anyone notice improvement in  in-call volume?

Does anyone have  list of what the rest of the listings are for so I can really tweak the sound without just a hit or miss approach?

Any real answers for volume out there?  Its getting to be quite annoying.  Something that survives power down.
