Recently, I got a message from AT&T that I'm near my data limit. This surprised me as my last cycle I barely got near 500mb. Since my bill isn't ready yet, I can't see exactly what it is I'm doing to use so much data.

To be safe, I figured I'd pull out my old router and set it up (D-Link WBS 2310). After hours of hassle getting it to work on my new computer, I wasn't able to get my Captivate to hook up to it.

My laptop gets on fine, gets a fast wifi signal, but my phone just says "Obtaining IP address" for a while and then gives up.

My Captivate gets wifi at work, at friends' houses, at coffee shops - but not at home.

I've set it up with no encryption, WEP encryption and WPA2 encryption.

Each time my laptop would hook up to the wifi but my phone wouldn't.

I searched some other forums and found similar problems with HTC phones.

Some answers say that D Link sucks. But that answer applies to other brands as well.

I don't want to buy another router only to find it still doesn't work.

Any help?

And you are sure you are not using mac address filtering on the router?  Your laptop mac address might be set to be allowed (if you had filtering configured a long time ago), but the new device (the Captivate) mac address would still get blocked...

have you tried manually entering the afress as well as letting the phone automatically finding the router?

did you use this router in the past to connect to your labtop?

First off, I completely disagree that dlnks sucks.  Having installed hundreds of routers and networks, I like dlink the best of all the non-commercial type routers.  I use 4 of them in my home to create multiple networks/subnetworks to carry internet traffic different from my video traffic and my mythtv setup.

Either way, setting up a router can be huge pain, and yes, like all routers dlink can go bad after time.  However, on the router, do you know if you have DHCP enabled?  Are you using a specific b/g/n network?  What channel is the router set to?  If you are not going to use this router all of the time and just want to get it working, I would suggest resetting it to default settings.  Should be a little button on the back of the router to reset it.

After resetting it, try to connect.  That should get rid of all firewall/filtering problems and should reset it to a dhcp server.

Well here's an  interesting turn. Remember how I said that my wifi worked everywhere else, like cafes and friends' houses? It seems that is no longer the case. I went to coffee and it searched in vain for an ip address. Then again at another cafe. So this is a whole new problem There's probably nothing wrong with my router. It used to work. I don't know what could have possible changed. I'm going to do a search on the forums.

Thanks everybody.

Ouch.  Major bummer but at least your narrowing down what is going on with the phone.  Hopefully you're still under the 30 days and can convince ATT to give you a new phone if there's no fix out there.

Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

I reset my phone to factory stock using Odin and Wifi works again. Sooo relieved I don't have to return the phone; I think I had one day left on my 30 day. The router seems to only work intermittently though, so I ordered a new one from newegg. I'm still wondering how I've managed to use 2gigs of data in two weeks.

I am having the same type of problem.  This is going to sound a little crazy, but go w/ me... I have ATT service for my cell phone and just recently got the Captivate.  I have Verizon wireless for my home internet (I live in a rural area w/ no dsl available, so go w/ a MiFi2200 from Verizon).  I have connected to the MiFi via my Captivate, but sometimes if it gets disconnected, for whatever reason, it won't reconnect... It searches & searches for the IP address as the OP said.

Also, what kind of wireless "device" are these phones equipped w/?  I have my MiFi set up to get the best signal & it never moves.  My desktop is located in the same room as the MiFi, so gets a great signal; I use a laptop throughout the rest of the house & always get at least 3 bars of wireless signal... Sitting here now, approximately 35 ft. from the MiFi (w/ walls in between), 3 bars of wireless signal from my laptop, none on the Captivate.  Is there any way to make the Captivate get a better signal from my MiFi?

TIA!!!
