Hi,

I've owned my Captivate for about a month now, I am on my third phone currently.  My first one bricked when I tried to get the GPS update pushed out by ATT... Lesson learned: Don't try to update your phone unless or until you have a very good G3 connection don't attempt with anything less... My second phone I had replaced because it would randomly power down, typically in the first 10% of the battery charge, after it would reach about 90% or lower it would stay on fine? Yesterday, I dropped my perfect, trouble free, awesome Captivate into the toilet...

I immediately removed the battery, the sim card & the SD card, and put dried it out the best I could without removing any screws, I shook the phone as hard as I could trying to force the water out of it... This morning I went to the grocery store and purchased a container of silica cat litter, wrapped my phone in a paper towel and placed the phone in the middle of the silica cat litter???

I'm beginning to believe God does not want me to own this phone? Any guesses as to how my story will end?

Ive heard of people putting there accidentally wet phones in a big bowl of rice.

That normally helps absorb the moisture as well.

A Google search returned the rice option as the most popular method, however in some forums individuals would argue that rice until boiled has no absorbent characteristics? The silica method seemed more logical, as various electronics are shipped with silica packets to absorb moisture? The Captivate has been in the silica for just about 24 hours now, I'm a little unclear on how long I should let it sit in the silica before trying it? I guess maybe as long as I can stand it? I've had to go back to using a Samsung Impression for the time being...

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Some advise...

1 ) Keep it standing (not laying down), with any hole at the bottom. (so any access water can drain out).

2 ) Leave the phone and the battery (separated) like that in the silica cat litter for a few days. One week if you can.

3 ) Before you put the battery back, blow it with a hair-dryer for half an hour and let it cool down.

4 ) After inserting the battery, DO NOT turn it on immediately. Leave it, with the battery inserted, for a day before switching it on or charging it.

5 ) Pray.

Thanks Omnian... I hope I have the patience for that? I am already getting very anxious... Not quite ready to start boiling the rice yet, Phaser77. But I really hope to be posting good news here shortly...

And no, cooking the rice does not initiate the absorbent properties of the rice, it'll only add more moisture into your already water-logged phone.  DRY rice on the other hand only has the ability to absorb moisture. There's no catalyst or reaction needed to make dry rice absorbent.

And good luck with the patience thing.  I know it's tough, because you really, really, really, want to know if it's f'ed up or not, but the longer you can hold out the better.

Just be patient and hope for the best.

Liquid will not easily dry in a confined area, especially if there are some felt inside which will need longer time to dry, thus my suggestion of one week.

I really hope we can save this device, because your warranty is definitely gone with the damaged water damage indicator.

There is another quicker method involving to soak the device into a pail of alcohol, but

This past weekend I consumed a whole bottle of Snake River Stampede 8 year old whiskey...
So far, the consumption of the alcohol appears to have had little to no effect on the drying process of the phone???
I would be willing to try it again, perhaps I was doing it wrong???
