Getting my daughter the Captivate for Christmas... among other things briefing myself on Bandwidth monitoring and capping if possible.  Found some interesting reading so far Net Sentry, Net Counter, 3G Watchdog, Data Counter Widget, DroidWall... 200MB with AT&T, we will see if that suffices or not. 

House has WiFi, so at least that will be a "free" zone.  Looks like a really cool device.

Hi there and welcome!

Just make sure to set the phone to notify of available wifi connections -- they are out everywhere in town and in more places than you think.  There's also a contact on the phone "AT&T View Data Usage" that will give you real-time usage of data, texts, and how much longer is left in the current billing cycle.

Example:
Next Bill Cycle: 12/23/10
Data (MB): 31 of 200
Messaging: 1845 of Unlimited

Absolutely there are lots of wifi spots out there included unprotected private networks... will certainly follow your tip and thanks for the heads up on the contact.  Looks like a nice tool for usage and measuring how well the tools I mentioned above track with what AT&T shows.
