My phone will be 2 years old in October, 2012, so I am looking toward upgrading this Fall.  Has anybody decided what their next phone will be?  I am hoping I can hold off to get Ice Cream Sandwich, but it seems like they are taking their sweet time getting those new phones rolled out, so they might not be down cheap enough for me to afford by Fall.

Of course my Captivate is already upgraded to Gingerbread anyway, and other than the irritation of the tethering foreclose messages, everything seems to be working smoothly.  I have upgraded my Google Maps navigation and now it is lightning fast and very accurate.  It can even find me out in the boonies where there is no cell signal, and accurately pinpoints my location within 30 feet.  I was a bit appalled that "Big Brother" can also find me so readily, but that's another topic.

Anyway, I would appreciate getting some feedback from any of you who have researched the new phones available and might have information about what might be good and/or what might not be so good.  I am thinking the Samsung Galaxy Note night be kind of cool.

I don't have an answer to your question, but you can get rid of those tethering force closes with a factory reset.

Here are the steps I took to factory reset my phone (the forum called this a GSM reset and the best way to reset).

fully charge battery
disconnect from usb
take out sim card
open dialer - *2767*3855#

As soon as you enter the last # it will start.  Make sure you backup everything beforehand as everything will be wiped.

The Note is nice but too big for me. Right now , if I had to get a new phone, I would probably get a Samsung Skyrocket II as I have heard than LTE will be coming to my area in the next 9 months or so. The HTC One X is faster and already has ICS but has a non-user replaceable battery and no memory slot. The yet to be released Samsung Galaxy III sounds good but is likely remain pricey. AT&T will usually let you upgrade 3 months or so before the actual 2 year anniversary.  I was about to upgrade but then I loaded Cyanogenmod 9 ICS on my Captivate. Operating speed improved, download speeds greatly improved, and no more annoying tethering force closes. (I am an at&t employee but these opinions are entirely my own)

Thanks for the info.  I appreciate it.  I am sure you are right about the Galaxy III staying pricey for a while.  Hope it's not too long.

Is Cyanogenmod 9 very stable on the Captivate yet?  I have no issues with 2.3 on my phone since I did a factory reset before loading 2.3 from 2.2.

NO MORE SAMSUNG PHONES FOR ME!!

I've had the Impression and the Cappy and should have learned my lesson with the Impression.  I'm going back to Sony and the Xperia ion is first on my list.
