Still debating on whether to go with the HTC Aria or the Samsung Captivate.

It's small phone vs big phone.  Not sure how the battery life will play out with the Samsung - although the Aria supposedly also has battery life issues.

HTC Sense sure looks nicer than the Samsung TouchWIZ.

Any thoughts on why the Samsung (besides screen size)?

tie breaker for me was 2.2 upgrade when it comes.  I don't think the Aria will get it.  I also like the TV out feature and faster proccessor of Captivate.

I was in the same exact boat as you were, but i've decided on which phone to purchase. The Captivate.

Yes, the Sense UI is gorgeous, and yes, the Aria looks really nice. But it's somewhat of a waste.

The Captivate has a much better display, faster processor, and pretty much everything else.

The Sense UI can be almost duplicated on any device, for under about $10 of apps.

  • You can get a weather widget that is basically a replica of the Sense UI's widget.
  • You can download "LockBot" and get the lock screen of the Sense Ui(even though some say it's buggy?)
  • You can download an application called "Launcher Pro", and get the pinch to view all screen support.
  • And i'm sure thats about all of the things sense UI has, that the Captivate doesn't.

The Aria has serious battery life issues, and (possibly) may never be fixed.

The Captivate's battery life is about 1 day, average for a smart phone.

The Captivate has Swype, which supposedly makes typing on your phone, super easy.

I mean, they are both great phones,  but the Captivate is packed with more muscle.

Yes - I too went with the Captivate and have no regrets.  It's an amazing phone.

The Captivate is extremely buggy. There is NO support from either Samsung or AT&T.  You can NOT sync to Outlook reliably and not without going through major hoops. Also, the Sideload Wonder machine that seems so great, could never get any software to install, no matter what I did with drivers, USB or SD card configurations.  I just bought mine last week, and will be returning it and going back to WM Tilt...until something better comes along.

Got the Captivate 2 days ago and haven't looked back since.  Or had any issues with SWM, rooting, etc.  Must be a PEBCAK error for this guy....so sad when people blame the problems on the phone without working through the issue...

These type of comments are just too much for me.  I am a programmer and a heavy phone user.  I have not had any problems with the Captivate that I don't get from every other type of phone.  What I find while programming, is that when people say it is "buggy" it usually means that they are not familiar with how to use something.  Most of the time, the programs work the way they are supposed to but they don't work the way the user thinks they should.  In this person's, case, not being able to side load apps.. well that is just a perk.  Most of the time you shouldn't even have to worry about that.  The majority of the apps needed are on the market.  The outlook sync thing is overrated anyway.  I used to be  WM user and was shocked I couldn't sync my outlook with the first Android phone I got (MyTouch 3G).  However, I found a way around it that much better... Loading my contacts to Google and syncing there.  Now I can have access to my contacts everywhere.

The biggest thing for me here is .. WM?  WM is the buggiest OS there is...  amazing.  I had to reboot my phone several times a day using WM.  Now I reboot my phone once every few weeks.

Just for the topic of the forum.  Aria or Captivate?  Not even on the same playing field.  If you are happy with small and you don't plan on using many features of the phone (watching movies, playing games.. etc) or installing that many apps then go with the Aria.  However, if you want something that will amaze your friends, play games flawlessly, record HD quality videos, play videos with awesome quality, be able to expand the use of the phone, then go with the Captivate.  I don't like TouchWiz at all (looks too much like IOs) so I use LauncherPro which is much faster than TouchWiz anyway.

All my opinion of course.

Totally agree with you yzfr1!

I was also comparing the aria and Captivate online before I decided. I was leaning heavily toward the Captivate to begin with. An in store comparison had me so sold on the Captivate that I paid am extra 75 bucks to upgrade 4 months early. The aria struggles to even barely compare with this phone! No regrets, and no looking back!

In returning my Backflip to AT&T I had a choice of phone as a replacement , my heart was always going to say Captivate and it's coming today, the Aria while nice just seemed so small in my hand.

I needed a phone to look at documents.  The larger screen was the selling point.  My daughter upgraded to an Aria at the same time - the compactness was a big factor for her.

It also made a difference that the Captivate starts off with 16GB or memory, and I quickly added 8GB more for <$20.  To get the Aria up to 24GB would have been a significant additional cost.

You just about said everything I would say. I agree with every point you made especially WM???  Ha ha ha. I also looked at the Aria and the Captivate. They are not even in the same class. The Aria was cute but too toy like for me. I never stop amazing my friends with my Captivate, even ones with iPhones. By the way I'm running Cognition 2.3b6 and don't miss my iPhone one bit.

I had an HTC Aria for 3 days before getting the Captivate (which was thanks to an incentive from my dealer).  I LOVE my Captivate but immensely enjoyed the Aria.  I almost hesitated to trade it back in when it came time to move into the Samsung.

Thats my two cents.
