ATT Captivate, official 2.2 update installed via Kies Mini.  As far as I can tell I'm rooted, superuser permissions granted to Titanium Backup and ROM Manager, both of which function correctly.  Also sideloading enabled, as Titanium Backup doesn't complain about not being sideloadable anymore (you know, the warning where it complained you might not be able to restore apps since sideloading wasn't enabled?  I don't see that anymore.)  I absolutely cannot get the Clockworkmod update.zip to load.  Every time I try, I get the error about how it can't validate the whole file signature.

I've read many various google search result links talking about all sorts of stuff that doesn't seem to apply to me.  I can get into the recovery mode, and I select reinstall packages and get that error.  I've tried using update.zips from ROM Manager, manually going out and finding the right one, and one that was a different size and I think probably associated with 2.1.  I've tried copying the file myself and letting ROM Manager do whatever it needs to.  I've tried doing reinstall packages several times in a row.

I had OneClickLagFix installed but before doing any of this I used OCLF to remove the lag fix and remove the ext2 tools and uninstalled it.  Phone functions fine (albeit as slow as it did before OCLF.)  Made backup with Titanium and everything.

What's next?

Edited to add:  Forgot to also say, I tried various settings of USB Debugging, tried it with the power cable plugged in and not plugged in, uninstalled and reinstalled ROM Manager, had Titanium put in a diff BusyBox since someone had mentioned that may have helped them.  I rooted with Super One Click Root or something like that...used that same program to enable sideloading.

Edited again: Error message is
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
I just ran Super One Click root again to make sure I had it all right.  One thing I noticed is that I tried to us SOCR to get an unlock code (the only command button available on the Samsung Captivate tab) and it failed with FFFFFF coming back?  No clue if that's important right now or not.

After some more digging around, it appears the recovery mode on my phone is 3e which only allows signed packages which is why I can't get clockworkmod installed.  At least I'm not going crazy with "why isn't it rooted when it says it is" etc. lol  I saw some other postings which directed people at a program to download and run an install.bat which would replace the recovery mode with either an older one or a modded one which removed the signed check.  However that did not work for me.  The program never ran successfully against my phone.  It looks like it used the rageagainstthesomething technique, which I thought someone said might not work anymore (one click root didn't work with that technique either.)

Thoughts?

I'm having the same problem.  Nice to know someone else is too, but not so nice that it is a problem.

I found this info on the xda forums and it worked for me.

Follow the (Windows-based) procedure detailed here to replace your stock recovery with a modified 3e recovery. All you really have to do is download the first zip file attached to the post, extract it, and run the "install.bat" script.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=497967&d=1295818558

2. Reboot after step 1.
3. Get ROM Manager from Market.
4. In ROM Manager, select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery".
5. Copy the ROM or kernel over to your phone (no need to rename it to update.zip).
6. Shutdown the phone.
7. 3-button combo power-up. You should be in ClockworkMod Recovery now. If not, something went wrong in steps 1-4.
8. Select "Apply zip from SD card" and browse to the kernel zip file and select apply.
9. Once the kernel is applied, reboot the phone from ClockworkMod Recovery's main menu.

I did the folowing instead of step 7 above (again from xda forums)
1.Make sure your phone is not plugged into your computer (or at least that your internal storage is mounted on the phone).
2.Take out any External SD Cards if you have not done so already ( I did not do this before).
3.On the CWM menu there should be an option labeled “FLASH CLOCKWORK RECOVERY.” Press it.
4.Press the Boot into recovery button.

It took me straight to the Clockwork Recovery.

edit:   I used  superoneclick 1.6.5 first before doing all this.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17523546/Clockwork_Recovery_Rename_To_update.zip

that link will give you an update.zip file that will get you directly into clockwork when you do the install update.zip from recovery mode will take two times to get into though

just rename it to update.zip to get it to work

It happened to me today.  (I think) for the newer ROMS, you can't reboot into 3e recovery with ROM manager.  Either do the three button trick, or use SDK android tools to "adb reboot recover" or if you have a custom rom, hold down the power button and select recovery from the menu of shutdown options.

I had this very same problem and there is a very easy fix for it.  If you dont have it already do yourself a favor and get root explorer from the market so that you can apply this fix.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213

This should do the trick, worked for me on my Captivate with 2.2

There are no costs for becoming a member, simply sign up and download the file.  I tried to post it here for you but for some reason it wont post, so you're going to have to sign up and download.

alright guys I'm wanting to go back to custom roms and have a new phone and am having the same problem.  YOu guys are speaking in a language I don't understand and I"m usually pretty tech savy.  I need someone to break this down exactly how to pull this off.  Its like "open a terminal emulator and type this"  ok where do I get a terminal emulator and how exactly is it going to know where my file is?  Can someone do a full type up on how to replace the recovery?

EDIT nevermind I was making this way too complicated.  Download, extract, connect your phone to a PC, and doubleclick install.bat.  Hopefully it worked, I'll find out soon enough
