I rooted so I can use a back-up app. I rooted and then loaded Titanium Back-up. And thank god I did. I wound up having to "wipe" my phone (restore to factory settings) and I used Titanium to restore all of my apps and settings. It worked like a charm. I cant really say if there is a down side to rooting. I don't see one. It has no affect on daily operation. And I left the "bloatware" on my phone. not like it uses up a lot of space. And it seems to run just fine.

not sure about the start up sounds issue. Haven't changed mine. I only boot every few days or even less. It takes so damn long I like to just leave it on most nights. I'll shut it down every once in a while so it can do anything it needs. I may remove a few AT&T software apps. I want to be sure which ones are safe first. Not really to worried about it. That's just me. I used unleash the beast and that's why I had to wipe my phone. I didn't realize it would remove the update software as well. And I'm not tech enough to get around that issue. For now I'm just leaving most of it on there. All personal choice. I have been spending the last few days removing bulls---t apps anyway. If I haven't used it since I installed it, it's gone.

I've had my phone since August, and I've chosen not to root my phone...yet. I want to see what happens after Froyo, then will make my decision then. Not to mention taking the time to root my phone is low on my priority list (I will not use a one-click pre-written program).

The guy in the video makes it look so easy , kudos to him. As a relative novice in roms and programming I an very hesitant to try rooting , again the video makes it look easy which is great. For me though rooting is not a huge issue and the bloat-ware doesn't bother me as I never open it....waiting on Froyo

if you use a one click program such as OCLF it is litterally 3 mins to root and is easy but rooting only really has no affect on your phones operation so unless there is something specific that you want to do i prolly wouldnt root

I did not see this post last night.... Is rooting your phone the only way to get tethering or is there another way?

You can tether using older versions of Samsung Kies. If you Google the name, you should be able to find the exact version and where to download it (I found it using a RapidShare search engine)...

Kies is Samsung's proprietary software for connecting your phone to the computer. There is no official US version out but people have had luck with some of the Euro versions.
