Can you be a little bit more specific? What exactly are you trying to do - install a ROM, a kernel, what?

WHat format is the file in and you should be trying to open it with ODIN. not double-clicking it as they sho9uld just be install files, not standalone executable files.

You'll need that, but you will whipe your phone using it, and if you don't know what your doing with Odin you better do a lot more research in the Captivate Android development section on XDA's forums.  Odin can be potentially dangerous to your phone if your not careful.  IN fact theres always a small chance of bricking with it.  Just read up on it more and make sure you follow all directions to a tee.
