Welcome to the forums mike. First off, you're in the right section, secondly, the SEARCH bar at the top is going to be your very best friend. If you do a search for "root" about 19 pages of helpful posts pop up - I would suggest you start with some reading and tutorial videos showing you how to root and explaining exactly what it entails including the risks of rooting.
That said, if you happened to look at the "stickied" threads (like the one just above your current post) you would see this
thread. I would start there adn take your time, do the due diligence as rooting and installing custom ROMs like Gingerbread-based ROMs require that you follow steps very closely and truly understand what you are doing and why.
