I want to upgrade my Samsung Captivate to 2.2 (I897UCJI6).

It seems to me that using ODIN flasher file.exe (found here, with instructions: http://briefmobile.com/how-to-android-2-2-Captivate) would be a very simple way to flash my Captivate to Android 2.2, and I'd like to give it a try. I have a few questions though first:

1. Does ODIN itself root my phone as part of its installation? If so, awesome! If not, when should I root it?
(A) Before running ODIN? (B) After ODIN is complete.

Thanks!

You'll need the correct driver first.  ODIN only roots your phone.  You'll need to download a custom ROM to get 2.2.  I recommend watching the How To Videos that Connexion 2005 posted on this forum and follow his instructions to the letter.

Oh, I was under the impression that following the instructions here: http://briefmobile.com/how-to-android-2-2-Captivate would flash my phone with 2.2 and I'd only need to use ODIN. Are you sure that's not the case?

Actually you can flash using odin thats how i got froyo on my phone. I didnt go the custom rom route i went with the "beta" version and its bug free and super fast (1988 quadrant score) and gps is fixed. I used this video
to get what i needed and this
as guide it was fairly easy good luck.

there are basically a lot of flavors of Captivate Roms:
1. "native" Captivate roms (roms based on source code written for the Captivate)
2. "non-native" Captivate roms (roms based on source code written for other devices, then ported over to the Captivate).

Then there are the firmware versions: 2.1, 2.1.1, 2.2, and 2.2.1.

JPx means 2.2.1 Froyo, while JIx means 2.2 Froyo, while JHx means 2.1.1 Froyo, and JFx means 2.1 Froyo. The different letters at the end (ie JPY) means variants. If the first two letters match, then they are compatible, i.e., a system application on there can definitely be safely switched over to another rom, everything safe and intact. Right now, the only phones with native JPx are the international Galaxy S phones, so when you're reading about a JPY rom for the Captivate, it means a 2.2.1 Froyo for the international Galaxy S hacked over for use on Captivate.

i understand the firmware thing has to be compatible but i have had times where i have had to of the same ttype of rome (JPY) but the kernels were different types and it did mess up the flash so everything FC on me which made me revert back to stock and reflash

Hi all.  I'm thinking of using the AIO Toolbox 2.5 to root my phone.  I want 2.2 Froyo only because I want to use Flash 10.1, but I am going to try to flash Cognitionv3.04 rom.
If I do all that will I be able to use the Flash 10.1 now?  Or do you have to have Froyo?

My phone has I897UCJH7 and I only found I897UCJI6 for Froyo. I read that the last 2 letters have to match your phone or it could cause problems.  Is that true?

Thanks

flash is only available on 2.2 so you are running 2.1 so you will have to flash over to 2.2 and i would recommend using cog over the beta froyo release jsut due to it is more stable and a lot better if you have a Captivate it should be all good the jh7 means you are running 2.1 and the ji6 means that it is 2.2 beta leak at least that is how i usually look at it

So I can flash to any ROM even though I'm using JI6 and most roms use JPY, JH7, etc? This still confuses me.

yes you can because the roms flash over whatever was on the phone and replaces it with whatever they are using like JI6 gets knocked out the door to make room for JPY

they just suggest going from JI6 ---> a different rom because most roms are most stable coming from that and you wont get as many errors or crazy stuff happening to you

What's regarded as the best or most stable base ROM? To be honest though, I haven't had a single problem with JI6.

well stability is up to you, most say cog but i havent really seen any reason of it being the best. I have used cezar, paragon, firefly, supernova, and lots more and they were all stable to me

if you have no problems with the current 2.2 without a custom rom then dont worry about flashinga  new rom right now we are only running 2.2.1 and 2.3 is still in its beta stages for our phone and still has a lots of kinks to work out
