Hi, so i recently Rooted my Captivate and i had some questions:

1. what is the best rom/firmware to use? how do i backup my current/stock rom before switching? is there some type of program that can do that for me?

2. how do you install games from the computer? should i use some type of android manager that instals games for me? because i have a bunch of .apk games on my pc

3.How do you block ads?

4. anything else i should get for my saftey, or popular apps that people use with rooted Captivates?

please include links if you can. Thanks!

Well the good thing I like about the Captivate is that you can always Odin back to stock.  The one thing that actually happened to me this weekend was when i did Odin back and try and update with Kies. It showed Unregistered Device.  You have to watch which ones you update because if you update to Gingerbread like i did. You Product ID will change and you have to know how to get back. Dont make the same mistake I did and do research before hand.  Yes just in case make a back up with Clockwork Mod before you flash.  I am using Ultimate Mod which is awesome.  But you have to watch the "Unregistered Device" when you Odin back to stock if you would have to.  Another popular Mod is Cognition.  You can always use Titanium back up to back up your Apps but I personally have had restore problems with Titanium so i refuse to use it again.  The app i purchased when i rooted was Root Explorer. I found it to be the easiest and most user friendly when you do root.  If you would like the Links to Ultimate Mod and the links to get back to stock that i used for Ultimate Mod I can provide those for you.  If you would like Cognition just google Cognition Mod and that will take you where you need to go.  I am a new rooter so i dont know that much about it.

1) There is no clear but rom to use, people suggest different things and it all depends on what you are looking for just do some reading of comments and make your choice and if you dont like it there are other roms you can try

2) there is a program called side load wonder machine you will have to create an account at android central to download it though but well worth it and very easy tool to use

3)Since you are now rooted try installing a program called Adblocker which is available on the market

4) Titanium backup (paid version) is a good program to have in your arsenal if you are going to be changing roms and all that, also i like ram managers but thats just me

Thank you!

also, if you want me to be specific, im looking for a rom that works just like the stock rom (but if was better, then that would be nice too) but specializes in battery conserving.

im actully having a lot of trouble with the sideload wonder machine. first, it wont detect my Captivate, then it also says when i try to run the program:

'loader.bat' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Well it is hard to say what rom is best for battery in my personal experience i have tried perception, cezar and now paragon

perceoption i had to charge 3 time a day with little use and even then it would still yell at me to charge it

cezar i got 24 hours out of it and still had battery life left thats with use

right now im trying out paragon and im at about 9.5 hours at 72% with listening to pandora, texting and web surfing

Hows the paragon rom? Who makes it? Just curious as I'm getting into this stuff, and Rom manager is making it easier!

The paragon rom, from what I've seen, is more focused in developing novel new features than in maintaining old features. It's also got the modified Speedmod (most stable + battery conserving) kernel and added overclocking to it.

I would not suggest it as a first custom rom, but if you're good at tweaking in features, you should definitely give it a try. I myself use the Paragon kernel because it's awesome cutting edge.
