Hey guys,

So I got bored tonight and decided it's finally time to root my phone and enter the big leagues.  Here's my issue, I've already loaded the phone with the leaked Froyo 2.2 beta, and I don't really mind it but I'm thinking it is stopping me from completing my root.  I was following http://www.ponack.net/how-to-upgrade-cognition-on-your-Captivate/ guide...I put the update.zip on my Internal SD and got to the recovery menu, but when I tried reinstalling packages I would get the E:signature verification failed error.  I assume it has something to do with the update.zip file I am using.  Does anyone here have an update.zip that will work with the 2.2 beta?  I hope I don't have to flash back to stock just to root....Kinda bummed right now because I can't even use Titanium Backup without a rooted phone.

I was getting the same error. But for some reason it still rooted. If that didn't work to root yours, try one of the ones posted here, or try adk developers forum. I would post it, but I don't remember where I got mine when I rooted 2.2. I have since gone back to 2.1 cuz I bricked it with 2.2.....

Check out z4root as well.  I've heard of people having luck with it ad 2.2 . No personal experience with that combo though here so sorry if it doesn't work out.

Well I tried doing z4root but to no avail, as it is a third party app and the phone didn't let me install it.  I'd have to sideload it which requires a root...I'm finding it hard to believe no one on here knows how to root from 2.2 =\

Hello,

I installed the 2.2 Odin mod. I also installed busy box and ran it. Then I installed Z4root
and it worked fine.

How did you install Z4 without the phone blocking you! Z4 is an app that is not obtainable in the marketplace, therefore it denies you installation...Please tell me how you got z4 working

He probably "side loaded" it.
Also be sure the file is named correctly. I named mine "update.zip" and it showed up on the phone as "update.zip.zip". The PC automatically adds the .zip. Just a thought. Sorry to interrupt.

Yeah the file was just named "update".  I've been researching non-stop about this and a lot of people are saying that the odin 2.2 is a JP3, and most of the rooting techniques work with JP2 or earlier.  Regardless I'm new to this so I don't really know what that means.  All I know is that i'm still stuck with an unrooted phone.  Crying

It's not the end of the world. You'll get it figured out and move forward. You could always just flash a new rom and not have to worry about rooting. It's not tough at all. Of course you'll have to reload all of your apps manually. But it's a thought. I've flashed a few times, with and without backup. It's not a huge deal. Just make a list of your apps and settings.
Just my 2 cents.

I Flashed Odin 3.1 from the XDA site first. Then installed busy box.
Z4root is findable at megaupload site. you can use the Sideload wonder app
to install it straight up. I also installed apps loader app as well for future
stuff. Once you have Z4root loaded you should be rooted once activated.
