***CONFIRMED 100% WORKING ON AT&T CAPTIVATE BY MOOSEFIST***

The following method should be relatively care-free but there is always a risk with activities like rooting a device or flashing a new firmware.

1. Download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/178498/SGH-I897%20Root%20Update.zip and rename to: update.zip

( «ammar»- I just added a new working link. I am not completely sure this is the right .zip I got the link from here http://www.attdroids.com/forum/samsung-Captivate-hacking/1138-Captivate-root.html . Please be careful. Onlly do this at your own risk.)

2. On your device, navigate to Settings > Applications > USB settings and select Mass storage
3. Plug your device into your computer, select mount USB from your device's pull-down window
4. Copy the update.zip to the INTERNAL SD memory (~14gb on this drive, not the one w/ Avatar if you've still got the 2gb SD card in)
5. Turn your phone off.
6. Hold down volume up and volume down while powering on the phone, this should get you to a recovery menu, you may have to try this a few times.
7. In Recovery menu select 'Reinstall Packages' (use vol_down then power to select)

Phone will reboot and you have:
1. su+Superuser
2. busybox (/system/xbin/busybox)

I edited the post and added a new link

BUT I am not 100% sure that is the same .zip samsung Captivate posted the link to. Please use this at your own risk! I will contact samsung Captivate and ask him about it.

What's up guys!...Just got a Captivate after migrating from the iPhone. Once my phone is Rooted, will I be able to download 3rd party apps for free?  I was able to do this with my Jailbroken iPhone so I was hoping to get the best of both worlds with the Captivate.  Thanks guys and glad to be here.

Hi Chuck:

You don't have to root the Captivate to load 3rd party apps --- check out the "Sideload Wonder Machine" at Android Central.com...

You still need to root if you plan on using bluetooth data tethering. Also, theres a program on the xda developer forums where someone wrote a one click root program for the Captivate.

Newbie here.  Trying to root my phone.  Followed the directions about putting update.zip on my phone.  At the end of the instructions it says:  "Phone will reboot and you have:
1. su+Superuser
2. busybox (/system/xbin/busybox)"

Where are these?  They are not in "my files."  I have an app "superuser permission."  Is this what I am looking for?  How do I go about deleting at&t apps?

you wont see the app for busybox its a file on the phone so if you plug your phone into your computer and have it set to mass storage you can go to that folder also super user is a program that you can access through the menu on your phone which will allow programs that need a root to work you just need to click accept when you first start the program that needs the root

yeah i re-named it to update.zip followed all the directions on designgears site and when i selected re-install packages this is the exact message i got

E:failed to open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip  (no such file or directory)  E:signature verification failed installation aborted.

I also tried super-one-click-root  and it makes it all the way to pushing rageagainstthecage then it just stops and goes no further

Ok Stupid question time:  Will rooting wipe my phone clean?  I wanna get all the AT&T garbage off there because i hate looking at them and having to go through them to get to my apps, however it took me a week to finally get this phone the way I wanted and I really don't wanna loose everything.

BTW Whats up everyone, my names Cory.
