Does anybody knows if we (captivate users) get this recent update?

As in an official update from your provider? Probaby not, especially considering there is the sgs2 now.

As for custom ROMs and such, it'll probably depend on the market for it and how interested developers will be to make it so. One can hope, but I wouldn't hold your breath...

4.0 was launched in partnership with Samsung, because the Galaxy Nexus will be the first phone to use it.

Leigh Geary from the website Coolsmartphone.com said that Ice Cream Sandwich would be the first version to be optimised for different types of mobile devices.

"It's interesting that Google have chosen to unify the OS across both smartphones and tablets.

"Previously the Honeycomb version of Android was purely for tablets and we assumed that two different flavours of the OS would continue," said Mr Geary.

Just read an article here:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/10/21/ultimate-android-4-0-update-list-which-phones-will-get-ice-cream-sandwich/

and if you scroll down to Samsung Galaxy it says:
"Samsung had a heck of a time getting Android 2.2 Froyo onto its original Galaxy S devices and while there are signs of a boost up to Gingerbread for every single one of these, there hasn’t been anything official yet.

These are aging phones as well and the Samsung Galaxy S II taking the reigns makes it easier for Sammy to opt out of getting all four of these up to Android 4.0.

So if you own Verizon’s Fascinate, AT&T’s Captivate, T-Mobile’s Vibrant, or Sprint’s Epic 4G and you want Ice Cream Sandwich, it might be time to look at an upgrade."

I'm not suprised, just because thats how the phone industry works.  The box our phones came in said they were upgradable to 2.2 so the fact our phone is slated for 2.3 was a surprise to me.   Still though, it's bs.   I mean you sign a 2 year contract, is asking samsung and at&t to support it and keep it updated for 2 years too much to ask?   I think not and personally since they can't do that they should go to one year contracts.   The nice thing is though I'm 100% certain cyanogenmod will give us ice cream sandwich.

If the ROM-producing awesomenessers (yes I just made that word up) have their way about things, ICS will be available to our phones -- it'll just be a matter of time.

Android = Open Source Code.  If there's a will, there's a way!

Honestly  I hope not.  In fact I wish they never said we were getting gingerbread.  I'm ready for them to just say "Captivate is dead, buy a SGS2 or Galaxy Nexus".  But I am running gingerbread 2.3.7 right now, and will be recieving an update to ICS as soon as cyanogenmod is ready to release it   Big Grin

I know this might be a stupid question, but is ICS safe to use? I'm running 2.2 still on my captivate and I have no idea how do root or anything like that. Does my phone even need to be rooted to use ICS? And what would be the best ICS to use? I know there are a lot of different builds out there, and also ones that do or don't come with mmu? And I'm not even really sure what that is.

Yes, you will need to Root your phone in order to install it. It will void your warranty - and there are some features that will not work with the Captivate.

If you are not comfortable with flashing your phone I wouldn't recommend it.

BUT - I do have the beta ICS from teamhacksung on my phone and I can say I absolutely love it. Mucho better than any Gingerbread ROM I ran before  I installed it.

I have a pay as you go deal, and have bought the phone from ebay. So I'm not really sure what warranty I have.

I'll have to look more into it. I want to run the most up to date system, but I just don't want to eff up my phone
