A Press Release were put out this morning by AT&T:

Customers who purchased an Android smartphone from AT&T introduced in 2011 can expect to receive an update to Android 2.3. All of these devices are planned to be upgraded from Android 2.2 to Android 2.3, also referred to as Gingerbread. In addition, Samsung Captivateā„¢ owners will be able to upgrade to Gingerbread.
Delivery methods will vary by device. Whenever possible, upgrades are delivered over-the-air (OTA), however in some cases the size of the file needed to install the update will require the user to connect via Wi-Fi or connect the phone to a PC to install the update. Factors such as manufacturer-defined software and other device performance improvements result in each device requiring a separate update which will vary in timing.
Beginning today and continuing over the next few weeks, Motorola ATRIX 4G users will be prompted to install the update. To download the update, users must be connected via Wi-Fi. In August, HTC Inspire 4G users will be notified that the update is available and can be downloaded when connected to a Wi-Fi network. AT&T smartphone users can access at any one of the company's more than 26,000 Wi-Fi hotspots at no cost.
The AT&T smartphones planned for a Gingerbread update are:

HTC Inspire 4G

LG Phoenix

Motorola ATRIX 4G

Pantech Crossover

Samsung Captivate

Samsung Infuse 4G

Hey!  This is legit!!  Here's a link to the actual AT&T presser:

I got worried when I didn't see the Cappy listed, but it's at the end of the first paragraph under Upgrade Details.

All I can hope is that perhaps it will improve my Captivate's signal strength, which is bad compared to all the other 12 phones I've had over the past 12 years.

Upgrade for phones purchased in 2011?????

What about us early adopters who purchased the phones when they first came out in July of 2010??  Are we going to miss out on this upgrade?  I would assume there will be some way around this even if they won't give us the upgrade.

Until i see it or my carrier says it's coming, this is a myth. I have to say that with Android and Samung Products in generals, upgrading your firmware is quite frustrating. I dunno if this is a Samsung thing or a carrier thing. I have to throw up a rotten apple, but I cant wait until the iPhone 5 comes out in a month or two. I can then use my Captivate only as an emergency backup phone. lol.

Based on the xda developers releasing info on the two beta gingerbread ATT OS that were out there back in June I expected Gingerbread to be released by now. Suspect ATT is waiting for some publicity moment for the most effect as I have not seen any other releases being mentioned.
