I am trying to correct a WiFi problem and in order to do that I have to download Gingerbread.   At first I was told to root, then upgrade.    I just read that I have to unroot then download Kies and upgrade.    Kies and Kies Mini did not work, it wouldn't recognize my device.    How do I upgrade to it?    AT&T told me to go ahead and upgrade to it since Samsung and AT&T could not solve my WiFi problem.

1) Are you rooted?

2) What OS are you using on your computer?  32-bit or 64-bit?

3)  What Android are you running now?

I used mini-Kies and had to update that to the latest build version.
I am running Win 7 64-bit.
Launch mini-Kies, connect USB cable to computer then phone.
Wake up phone, selct correct USB mode (top one, upgrade firmware, I think)
mini-Kies recognized the phone and I launched the upgrade.
I had no problems with this upgrade or with Froyo.

I am in the US and have not rooted my phone, I am running stock official releases.

Hope this helped a little.

My phone is rooted and currently has Froyo.
My computer is a Windows 7 64 bit.

How do you launch an upgrade or is there a gingerbread file I need to download to the computer?
Thanks so much for your help.
AT&T is taking way too long rolling it out and customer service told me its ok to download and if I screw it up, I can send it back.

First, you have to get kies-mini to launch.
If you can get there, then connect the cables and phone in sleep mode.
Wake the phone and it should go straight to recognizing that it is connected to a cable and ask you to choose your USB mode; select the first (top) toption Kies (firmware upgrade).
Once you do that, kies-mini should recognize your phone and set up and should tell you that you have an upgrade available.
Select upgrade and it should download the upgrade to the computer then transfer the upgrade to the phone and last, it should reboot the phone.

That is in a perfect world.

Because you are rooted, you may need to unroot, I think that ODIN or Titanium Backup should be able to get you there, sorry, I don't have any experience here.
