Help the noob after I unleashed my Captivate.

I've tried to do an OTA update, but that fails.  After reading several threads here about UTB, I think that I should get it out of my phone.

Before doing that, I've installed Titanium Backup, but am having a problem with it!   Sad

When it asks for root rights, I get a message that "Superusers Permissions has stopped unexpectedly."  Then there's the error message about not acquiring root privileges.

So, I move to the problem tab, but when I tried to install Busybox OTA it failed as well!   Evil

The phone works just fine, but obviously something is wrong and want to fix it before 2.2 becomes available.

In order to backup with titanium, you need to root your phone first.

Again, pardon my noobness, but I thought Unleash the Beast rooted the phone.   HUH?

Yes unleash the beast does root the phone but it also uninstalls the software needed for OTA updates

OK thanks for that info.  So if beast rooted the phone and Titanium isn't working, what's my next plan of attack to get back to where I can get the OTA updates?

Sorry to be a PITA.  Embarrased

The only way he could have said that superuser has stopped unexpectedly is if he had already rooted the device. So obviously, the device is rooted.

Before you get carried away, If all else fails, use a diff program and root again. (or "re-root") Fallow one of the several tutorials and download the root software to your PC, then rename it to "update" and place it on the SD card. Then reboot the phone like it says to. (this is a brief description)

This is a possible solution. If anyone has other ideas or a problem with this idea, please speak up.

Icerman, I had the same thing happen when I installed unleash the beast. Fortunately, I had a separate root program installed (from earlier) so Titanium Back-up worked like a charm. Try to be patient and find a solution to the TB issues. TB works awesome.

OK - I've downloaded and installed Samsung Captivate One Click Root http://theunlockr.com/2010/08/02/how-to-root-the-samsung-vibrant-Captivate/

As best I can tell it installed properly, but there's no change with Titanium Backup.

I still get the "Superusers Permissions has stopped unexpectedly" and the error message about not acquiring root privileges.

Would I be best to copy all pertinent data to my desktop, make a note of all the apps I've installed and then do a hard reset of the phone?
