Hello

Lets use this space to discuss any problems/ good changes that you might be having after updating to gingerbread. I am seeing the following after updating:

Pros:
- Phone is definitely faster overall
- Extremely glad that the standard browser has become so much better. Earlier it was pretty much unusable. I used to use Opera but now opera is gone from my phone. Happy
- I like the color changes a lot.
- The battery usage lookup is more detailed

Cons:
- Getting this weird "Tethering manager has stopped working" error quite often. I get this message even without anything attached to the phone
- Battery life seems to be a little worse (still need to check this for a few more days). I used to get 1% discharge in 3 hrs earlier. Now it has become 1% every hour on standby.
- I got 1 random phone restart for no reason. Hasnt happened after that

Others please share your views over here.

Yeah,

cons:
getting the tethering error here, too, when switching to wifi.
Lost ability to kill data on the power button long press.
bloatware back
root removed, although superuser seems to work for some of the apps, but no all.

pros
Power seems OK so far.
faster
nice color scheme
better signal(was showing almost no bars in my kitchen, no have 2, could be missread, we'll see)

looks like we got version 2.3.5?

PROS:
  - Honestly, I don't see any big improvements, not in speed or battery or anything.
  - I can swipe all the way around from menu to menu (woopie doopie)
  - Email on front bottom states how many emails are new.

CONS:
  - Same Tethering error message every time the phone is attached to either computer or charger.
  - I have had to pull the battery out of the phone twice today because it locked up.
  - Having a difficult time getting the phone to attach to wifi at the house with correct password.

@ jec145:

Its sad thet they removed the data toggle from the power switch long press. Another change I noticed is that you cant set your phone to silent mode from the notification pull down anymore, you have to do it from the power long press.

PROS
Only Pro I can see is that non-Market apps can now be installed.  Other than that... just not seeing anything.  Doesn't seem any smoother or faster.  Haven't noticed a difference in battery life, but too early to tell.  I like the new battery notification icon (big deal).

CONS
The tethering error message (I've never tethered, or even tried to).
Phone has rebooted spontaneously several times.
I've had to pull the battery at least half a dozen times today due to freeze ups.  Buttons were nonfunctional, screen wouldn't shut off, couldn't power down with power button.
Can't toggle 3G from power button.
I used SMODA widget during Eclair to toggle 3G.  Doesn't seem to work with Gingerbread.  Also tried to turn on 3G through menu.  Didn't seem to connect - kept getting not connected error messages from apps.

All in all, after waiting all this time, I'm really, seriously, disappointed.  And since we're never going to get ICS, we're stuck.  Seems like all the custom Roms have their own issues.

I joined the forum to put my 2 cents in:

The tethering manager error is annoying but you can get rid of it if you really want to. Basically, the app is failing because it's using data created under Froyo (remember that no data was wiped). You can either root and remove the app or do a factory reset (which will wipe your data). Either will remove the tethering error.

Random restarts and shutdowns may also be cured by a factory reset for the same reason but while I personally know it will fix the tethering error I have no experience with random restarts and shutdowns.

Rooting is still possible if you use the FUGU method. I'm not going to explain it here but it's easy to find online. I was rooted under Froyo but since Gingerbread isn't restricting non-market apps, I have little reason to now and probably won't unless I feel the need to use a custom ROM again or remove the bloatware.

Since installing the official Gingerbread I've noticed slightly improved battery life and better signal in my office (which had poor signal before). The interface seems more responsive as well.

The most disappointing thing is that my ringtones and notifications are still randomly reset after connecting to a PC in mass storage mode. I shouldn't have to go out of my way to fix that; it should just work.

All told it's a good update but if they had wiped the data as they said they would, most of the complaints would probably have been handled. And frankly the wait to get this update is not indicative of it's value; a wait this long should have yielded more benefit.

Oh, gosh... I wish I'd read that before I posted this question...

http://bit.ly/ytqrzM

...wondering about it just now over in the official Gingerbread thread.  Shame on me for not checking this thread first.

Thank you for that information.  I'll now go update the other posting.

(Reminder to self:  Always search first... always search first... always...) [grin]

Well I don't want to wipe all my data, and I'm not going to root my phone either.
What APP is failing that I can remove to get rid of this annoyance?

It's not an app you can remove without rooting.

I have noticed a few more issues after upgrading
- Few games that i used to play have started stuttering duting gameplay. Ex: City Jump, Ninja jump and fruit ninja
- After browsing for a while my hjome screen always resets. I use ADW launcher and it resets quite a bit after browsing.

If anyone else has faced these issues and has found a soluton please let me know.

I did noticed that after doing a Factory Resst the tethering error went away.
I have had a chance to play wit much esle but so far thing are faster.
I like how they fixed with editing for text. the little glide tab moves better and smoother when going over the letters to fix spelling error.

What is this color change thingy everone is talking about?

I also use my phone to connect bluetooth via may JVC in the my car. I aways had problems with that when I made phone call.  Afterf I would hang up from a call it would basicly lock up the cappy and it go through this internal procees of short vibration then disconnect it self from BT connection. I would have to shut the BT off then start it back or do a power off

I did notice that it now will discconnect the phone media and leave my audio media connected so I can still stream my music but not able to make phone calls. But I can  manually connect back with out reboots. Other than that I still have to investigate more.

The update process was pretty quick, the only thing I am missing is the daily briefing. I didn't do any of the hard rest before the upgrade, didn't want to reinstall what I have on the phone, took a gamble and came out almost perfect, I must be one of the lucky one. My phone is not rooted BTW. Over all I like the upgrade, hopefully everyone will have the same luck as I do. Big Smile

OK, more stuff I noticed:

cons:
1. apparently the phone resets randomly?  I've only seen it once, and it happened at night while not in use.  other people are complaining though.
2. calling a phone system with options does some wierd double tap of the keys, although I can't hear more than 1 tone.(ex, dialed phone mail, dialed say 1455, it says i dialed 144555.
3. lossing sammy programs I had, desk, car, daily.  not sure if I'm missing any others
4. ATT contact sync on first use on contacts after upgrade split out all of my contacts(I now have 5 Bruce's, when its all the same guy with different numbers.  They were all one contact before)

Pros:
1. doesn't seem to drain the battery at all when idol, or at least just a trickle.
2. doens't do the stupid search thing any more(accessing search button randomly, mulitple times, etc.)

Dragonwen - Daily Briefing was a widget.  Hold your finger down on a blank area of any "home" screen and when the menu pops up, pick "Widgets", then scroll down the next menu and pick Daily Briefing.  If it's still a widget in 2.3, that is......

Thanks zerenia, but I think Daily Briefing has been removed from the widget
