I too have random freezes of my phone after the 2.3.5 upgrade. I had the tethering issue and ended up doing a factory reset to get rid of the issue.

The freezes happen about once a day. Not sure why it happens. I will be doing something and the phone just freezes. The screen will stay on the entire time its frozen.  I do a battery pull to get it going.

GPS is lousy as it was before.  Nothing new here.

The icons are more polished.

PROS
Only Pro I can see is that non-Market apps can now be installed.  Other than that... just not seeing anything.

I noticed this is avaiable. How would I go about getting non- Market apps? I am so lost when it comes to computers

There are several alternative markets out there.  Probably the biggest is Amazon, which offers a different paid app for free every day.  Download and install the Amazon Market app here.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000626391
You wouldn't even have been able to install that before this latest gingerbread update, except by sideloading.  Don't worry about what this is, because you don't need to do that anymore.  Another source is Appbrain.  There are also <alternative> sites where people have uploaded paid programs.  I won't list those here, google them if you want.  To allow non-market apps you need to go to Menu>Settings>Applications and check the Unknown Sources box at the top.

Pros: I like the update to the email interface for exchange mail. Much easier to access my folders.

Cons: Ran the update 2 days ago, kept getting the tethering error and wound up doing the factory reset. Kind've a pain, but no biggie.

I am having an issue with it showing connectivity to both WiFi & 3G at the same time. When it first picks up a WiFi signal, I only see the WiFi icon (Just like it was before Gingerbread). However, when I launch certain apps, the 3G icon appears too. I think it's still pulling data from the wifi b/c I don't see the traffic arrows blinking on the 3G icon, but I don't think it's supposed to be there at all.

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the GPS receiver b/c this issue only happens when I start an app that uses GPS (Maps, weather, GPS status, etc...) The icon stays even after I've closed the app and the only way I can get it to go away is if I cycle the data network connection.

I was wondering if anyone else has encounterd this & if they've found a solution?

CONS: Tethering Manager Force close

PROS: I really like the updates to the email. Definately more user friendly.

Question: Since when was there a "pinch" function in the stock browser? I went from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3 in less than two months and yesterday was the first time I saw this.

I did not perform a factory reset before installing the update.

Pros:

I seem to be getting an extra 4 - 5 hours out of my battery now (estimated average)

The phone seems to shut down and boot up significantly faster now. When I would power off the phone before it would play the tone, screen goes black and then 20 - 25 sec later the phone would vibrate. Now it takes maybe 10 sec before the phone vibrates. When I would power on the phone before it would get to the idle screen, saying scanning SD card at the top status bar, but I couldn't unlock the phone with my pattern for probably 30 seconds because it would be running so slow that it wouldn't register most of my finger motions. Even after finally unlocking the phone it would run very slow for another 20 seconds. Now I can give it 10 seconds after the idle screen and I can unlock it and it runs fairly fast!

The new icons and status bar look is great. The battery indicator seems to have more increments than before. The ability to scroll from your last desktop page to the first is nice. The number of unread messages is nice. You all already know about this stuff.

The mail interface is MUCH better!

Bugs/Quirks:

Sometimes after my screen times out and goes black I will press the unlock button but nothing happens. I have to press it a 2nd or 3rd time for the screen to come back on. It's another minor bug that I can deal with and get used to but I haven't seen it mentioned on here so I am curious if anybody else is experiencing this. I am considering performing a factory reset since I didn't before the update in hopes of fixing this and the tethering bug.

I started out with 2.2 Froyo and was able to use the "pinch" motions to zoom the default browser. The browser now seems to have a feature where you can do a finger motion to bring up the open tabs. I have experimented with it and the only way that I can replicate it every time is to imagine an imaginary line dividing the screen down the middle and then taping a finger in between the left side of the screen and the line and another finger between the right side of the screen and the line at the same time and sliding them in towards the line. Kind of like the finger motion to zoom the page in. If I press my fingers down on the screen, hold, and do the motion it zooms but if I tap them on the screen, quickly give them a little slide inward and release it brings up the tabs every time. I do this accidentally all the time when trying to zoom in on websites and it is pretty frustrating. Is anybody else experiencing this problem?

I am researching and reading to see if I really want to do this update.   I have a few questions from those who know better than I:

1) if I have checked the "backup user account to Google" do I really care about doing a Factory Reset?   What will I lose?     I've read about people losing their contacts but isn't that backed up?

2) I use the default mail app and have set it up manually to use by MSN (Hotmail) email account through Exchange Server so I get Push email (not POP) and whenever I delete on the phone it auto syncs to delete on the actual Hotmail server too.    Is there any reason to believe this won't work in the same way under 2.3?

3) When I got my phone off Ebay a few months ago the GPS stunk.  I went into LBSTESTMODE  (*#somethingsomethingsomething....) and switched the GPS server and a few other settings and then the GPS works fine - locks in 10-15 seconds.      When updating to 2.3 will it take my settings back to those not-working-well defaults and can I still get into LBSTESTMODE again to change them?    A few other threads made it sound like LBSTESTMODE doesn't work in GB but then somewhere else it said it did but its called ANGRYGPS.

4) my Cappy has been up for about 600 hours now.  I'd prefer not to have it be resetting itself and freezing daily.  Is this just something that comes with the territory for this GB updtae or have people figured out how to avoid that?

I've read that doing a factory reset before updating to 2.3 will keep the tethering error from happening.  I don't know about other things since I haven't done it yet.

I would also like to know this since I'm currently on 2.2 and waiting.

One new, and long awaited, addition to 2.3.5 is hands free Bluetooth dialing through the headset.  At least, it is working on my Blue Ant Q2.  No more having to shout at Google Voice Search to make calls in the car, or needing to have the phone out when I am walking and want to make a call.  It looks like the headset now calls Voice Search.  What took so long Google?

Another thing...I ran the Quadrant Standard Benchmark just for giggles.  I used to get tired of waiting for the I/O tests which seem to take forever.  This time the I/O took a long time but the result page showed that the Captivate 2.3.5 at a shade over 1200 is just a little bit  slower than the Nexus One (Froyo+), and about a third faster than the stock I9000 Galaxy S.

Pros: Still looking for something significant. I suppose the non-market apps is a good thing.

Cons: The TetheringManager force close is getting old fast.

I have an issue that I haven't seen mentioned here yet: since the update I can't receive emails on one of my email accounts (Verizon) when on 3G. I get a message saying "Unable to Connect to Server". When I switch wifi back on the emails come though fine.

I have a second email account (a domain email address) set up that is working properly on 3G and wifi.

When on 3G is exactly when I DO need to be able to receive emails on my phone. When I'm on wifi is generally at home or office so I receive emails on a computer.

This has me stumped. Any ideas?

I think I'll wait and see how this topic develops. From what
I can glean, there are no real advantages of 2.3.5 for me.
I have a rooted 2.2 phone with non-market apps enabled
(easy to find an app to do this) and wireless tethering.  The
battery usage seems to be coming down on both sides for
2.3.5 and the only other advantages seem to be (possible)
improved browser performance. Given that and all the issues
that people are find I think I'll wait until some better solutions
(than a factor reset which is not hard but a pain to rebuild
from) are found.  Thanks so much to everyone's thoughts on
this - it has been very helpful!

Craig K

PS: I suspect that if you know the right file to modify or delete, the
Tether-FC issue could be fixed, but I'm not enough of an expert to
figure that out.

I upgraded my Capitvate to 2.3.5 from 2.2 two days ago. Everything was fine except for the teathering error. Well today I did a total wipe on my cell using the GSM Reset so far no issues or errors . Ill keep you updated

*******************************************************************
Update 02-13-2012 Three days later after my GSM reset and upgrade to 2.3.5 all is well. No issues. This is the best my Capivate has run in almost 1 1/2 years. Teathering issue is gone after the reset . I kinda like my phone now! sad to say lol. Oh FYI when I did the GSM reset it wiped it out and I was on a clean install of 2.3.5
