What more is there to really say about it besides the Captivate won't get that update anytime soon, especially since other countries have the 2.2 for their Captivates and the Epic 4G has started to roll out the update.  It would make no sense for us to get 2.3 unfortunately.

I dunno if Samsung will give us Gingerbread or not, but the Nexus S has to be good news as far as our phones and XDA community.  The Nexus S's hardware is pretty much identical, aside from a few extra bells and whistles.  however the core hardware is the same, so I imagine its version of Gingerbread could easily be ported over to our phone.

I wouldn't mind much since touchwiz blows Sticking out tongue

Thanks for posting this link --have to believe there's a reason for everything, even a reason for missing updates.  One can hope...

The Nexus S official website mentions a dedicated graphics processor, does the Captivate have this?

Yes it does, but Its solderd on one chip, the hummingbird processor.  its a CPU+GPU on one chip basically.  And the GPU in the Galaxy S phones supposedly smacks the other mobile processors around on graphics.

Honestly though there really is nothing special about the Nexus S that would even make me choose it over a Captivate if I was in the market.  Its just a Galaxy S phone with Vanilla Android pre-installed, a front facing camera, and minus an SD card slot which is almost a deal breaker IMO.  Oh it has near field technology...who freaking cares?  I mean I don't use my SD card slot now, but my MS Zune seems to be close to dying and when it does I'm planning on picking up a 32GB for music.

The thing was when the Nexus one came out, it was a big deal because it became the flagship of the android community and was the undisputed "best" android phone out there, and had mobile technology we've never seen before.  The Nexus S's best thing about it seems to be Gingerbread.  And also the Nexus one was pretty much a failure because of the poor way it was marketed, only being able to subsidize it through the worst carrier, or buy it non commitment for $529, and from what I've read about the Nexus S, they haven't learned a thing.

I strongly feel samsung plans to skip 2.2 for the US and give us 2.3. It would only make sense. Why waste time developing 2.2 for the US, going through the hassle of distributing it, all while they have a perfectly good vanilla 2.3 already cooked up aside from some skinning. Yes, I understand we have a 2.2 beta, I feel like around the time it leaked, google asked samsung to make a nexus s, so they leaked it to assure us they are working on 2.2, only to go above and beyond and give us 2.3 before the other companies. On paper it sounds like a brilliant strategy to reverse their horrendous  update reputation. Right now sammy is nobodies favorite company. But yeah...

Sammy won't release 2.3 to the masses...Every US based carrier has it's own team hard at work just designing ways to add tons of bloat and lag to a otherwise nice package and then working even harder to be able to lock these phones down...AT&T especially...they have to because Steve Jobs can't stand anymore competition from any Android phone...The only way anyone will ever get it is to buy the over priced Galaxy phone Nexus 2 or wait for Gingerbread to be ported over...it's simple as that...Heck...some Gingerbread parts are already available for those of us who have rooted..and are being included in many updated roms...Before long...you'll be able to have a complete Gingerbread rom to flash...without the bloat or the lag...and even a working gps...
Now...you all can keep wishing as much as you want...nothing wrong with that I suppose if that's how you spend your time and energy...but...time for a real dose of reality of this...  Try this little experiment...crap in 1 hand and wish in the other...and see which fills up the first  ... Sorry to be a party pooper...I just couldn't help myself... Laugh Laugh Laugh Laugh Laugh Wink Wink

My advise...which can be taken with a grain of salt if preferred...is to wish for something with a real possibility...and that is for the source code either 2.2 or 2.3  to be released soon...then you all will see some the most amazing things done with it...that many of you won't want to have a stock phone for very long...That my Christmas wish

I understand it may not happen. It's all speculation. I specifically said that I personally feel samsung will skip 2.2 for 2.3.

Name me one official 2.2 phone in the US from samsung? Oh right, there is none.
Name me one official 2.3 phone in the US from samsung? Nexus S.

Yes, they will skin it, and bloat it down. ATT will bloat it some more. At least then we have an official release of 2.3. After that, I'm fine. I planned on rooting after the next update anyways.

What i'm trying to basically say is... Yes, they probably don't want to give us 2.3 because then nobody will buy the Nexus S over the other Galaxy S'. But then again, why not just take a shortcut and give us all 2.3 rather than 2.2? It'd just make a ton of sense for samsung to. I'm not worried. Either way, we'll get it. Our phone is basically a Nexus S with some bloatware and a little skinning. Samsung probably knows this all, therefore, why make us go the backroot of getting it, rather than publicly releasing it, getting back some sort of reputation(At this point, I don't think anyone holds anything samsung says to a grain of salt)

But Yeah.

But Yeah.

The reason they just won't give us 2.3 is because that is what is on Google's developers phone...not what is going to be offered for the masses...that's why.

All carriers have to put their hooks into it...ever single one...and because of that...unless you root and flash..will never get the un-bloated vanilla version of it. The carriers are in it for the money..and they want you to use their version...why...simple...money...and lots of it...They want you to pay for their premium services they offer...and not use the free services available...The majority of ordinary folks  don't root and flash custom roms. Most ordinary folks don't bother..because they are afraid of bricking their phone or voiding their warranties...or don't know about these things...so they offer them a bloat filled pretty package all shiny and new...and that is good enough for most folks..That's changing though...and the carriers know it...more and more folks are finding out about places like this and XDA...and are curios..and wanting something other than what is being forced on them...This  is why they are doing everything in their power to lock these phones down..and sooner or later that is going to be the norm...with all carriers...It will be built in on the cpu...and once that happens...well...that's all she wrote...

I doesn't hurt to wish..and it doesn't hurt to hold out hope...but..folks should be realistic as well...and prepare for the worst...Look at the Verizon forums...you will see what is coming our way sooner than you can imagine..I wouldn't wait till the official 2.3 is out...I would grab one of the unofficial version when it does...because it will already have the bloat removed...and you will be able to see if any additional hooks have been added to deny root access or side-loading...

Well it will take some tweaking but I am willing to bet the guys over at XDA or similar will have 2.3 ready for our phones bfore Samsung/ AT&T have 2.2.

Check it out, they already ported the kernal and are tweaking it as we speak!

Doesn't look like there is much new going on here. I did see an official Froyo 2.2 rom from Rogers in Canada but didn't see any Gingerbread mention. I'm not sure it will come soon.
